INTENSIVE SUPPORT

PROGRAM

COVID Intensive Learning and Support Program

Phase 1 of COVID Intensive Learning and Support Program is well underway. This program is an initiative from the NSW Department of Education with the aim of boosting students’ learning and helping them to quickly get back on track after COVID19 disruptions last year. All KKHS students will have access to this support by the end of 2021 through either Master Classes or small group withdrawal.

Master Classes

Master classes have seen expert teachers working alongside classroom teachers to boost students’ Literacy and Numeracy skills and content. There is explicit instruction relating to topics year groups have been working.

 Small Group Instruction

Groups of 3-6 students have been working towards consolidating their Literacy and Numeracy content and skills. This term has seen Years 7 and 9 students focusing on Reading processes and comprehension strategies, Year 8 developing their Writing skills in three key areas; and Year 10 improving their Numeracy skills.

Reading - Students have been using comprehension strategies such as RAP (reading around the page), monitoring, building vocabulary, using inference (coming to a conclusion or opinion based on evidence, previous knowledge and experience), finding the main ideas within a text and summarising.

Writing - Writing sessions have 3 main focus areas- creating Informative, Persuasive and Imaginative texts. Students have been able to use their prior knowledge and personal interests to build on their writing skills to create well- planned and structurally appropriate texts, such as research reports and persuasive arguments.

Numeracy - Numeracy sessions have seen students consolidate their number skills around place value, decimals, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Content has been centred around hands-on activities that relate to how Numeracy is used in everyday life.

COVID Intensive Learning and Support groups will continue until the end of the year. Year groups will rotate around each of the learning areas, with the inclusion of Stage 6 in terms 3 and 4.
