STUDIO SCHOOL

Year 9 Big Picture

This term has been successful term for our Year 9 Advisory. Students have had the opportunity to follow their passions and interest and were given the green light to research. We have redesigned the room and the students made A15 their own and are currently loving their learning environment. Some of the projects undertaken include research into motorbike recreation, World War II, box braiding, Aboriginal art, barista, fabrication, animals, medical engineering, construction and concreting.

A number of students have taken up work placement opportunities and have obtained a Learning Through Internship experience in our community.

They are:

Lachlan - Solid Engineering

Keara – Adnama Beauty Salon

Tahlea – Whitethorn Academy

Lorissa – In school Music

Torah and Tiarna – Library assistants

Ellie – J.A.K Fencing

Megan – Mcpherson Concreting

Justin – Little Hill Farm

Zara – Barista Course at Kurri Kurri Tafe

The students of Year 9 Advisory continue to develop as self-directed learners and are growing closer as an advisory. We have also started our fund raising for their excursion to Fort Scratchley next term by going to Kurri Kurri’s Return and Earn every 5 weeks to cash in our cans.

Year 10 Transition: on track to success

Year 10 Transition Advisory have been involved in the Validate Me program. This program, run by Youth Express, aims to instill in students the ability to self-validate rather than relying on external approval from peers. The program provides a foundation in self-belief to help create a smoother transition to a work environment. Each week sees a different focus. Topics such as entitlement, empathy, positive peers and vulnerability are some of the areas within the program.

As part of the Transition course students are encouraged to develop their learning through attending Internships which can involve a shadow day with an employer or a more consistent experience in a chosen industry. This term many Year 10 students are embracing this real-life learning, with some students being involved with more than one business. Several students are also participating in TAFE opportunities.

11 Big Picture say farewell to well-liked student

The students in our advisory are working on some cool projects this term and have formulated some interesting driving questions, such as “How can I design a better roof rack for my 4WD?”, “How can I build and program a wi-fi controller for an LED light strip?”, “How can I make money from making and selling candles?”, “How can I use Garageband to produce music?”, “What are the best habitats for zoo animals?”

While we have been quite busy with our projects, we’ve had time to celebrate and commiserate as well. We celebrated two birthdays recently: Tyson and Faith both turned 17.

We also bid a fond farewell to Alexis, who is moving to Nelson Bay. We hope that she gains a place in the Big Picture academy at Tomaree High. Our loss will be their gain. Alexis’s kind heart and warm smile will be sorely missed from our advisory. We wish her all the best and know she’ll stay in touch.

Alexis:

“What I have enjoyed about Studio School is all the opportunities I’ve had, the amazing people I have met along the way, and all the things I’ve learned. What I will miss the most are the people I have become friends with and the laughs we’ve shared, the little family we have become and lots of great memories.”

Stage 6 Transition: leaving school to learn

This term, Stage 6 Transition have had a lot of students out on internship:

Riley has been working with Chris Atkins Plumbing, dedicating time over the school holidays and throughout the term to show his commitment to learning and willingness to support his employer.

Jackson attended two weeks at AR & E Moss Building where he worked on a variety of constructions sites.

Haley is currently working at both the Kurri Kurri Library and Kurri Kurri Public School canteen and is enjoying the different experiences such as being involved in Rhyme Time and working as part of a team.

Ky completed two weeks at Summit Bathrooms. He enjoyed visiting different worksites each day and the various tasks he got to work on. Working with different tradies also helped expose him to possible career pathways.

Jasmine has completed an induction at Kurri Kurri Public School Canteen which is a huge achievement as she has only recently joined us.

Zack completed a week at GRB Constructions. He found the work environment really welcoming and enjoyed that he was able to learn more by asking questions and working with others.

Rory has been working one day per week at Solid Engineering and Sulzer. He is enjoying the communication between fellow employees and that he always feels supported in what he is doing.

Luke and Aidan completed two weeks at          K. Sales Constructions and enjoyed learning in a new environment. Aidan is now looking at completing another internship with a plumber.

Phoenix and Josh also attended two weeks at K. Sales Constructions where they enjoyed the welcoming environment and working with new people as well as learning new skills such as dynabolting and installing L-brackets.

Tenesha is still attending Stone Real Estate two days per week to complete her School Based Traineeship.

Chenika has been working four days at Alfabs while completing course work for her School Based Traineeship.

Montanah has continued her internship at Mulbring Public School and is now doing two days per week. She is loving absolutely everything about being a primary school teacher and the staff and students are enjoying having her there to offer support and run activities.

Keleigh has continued this term at Highway Ford

Alex completed two weeks at B & H Sutherland Builders and enjoyed learning new skills that he had not previously learned and enjoyed that it exposed him to different trades. As well as this, Alex has been attending internship at Alfabs regularly and is loving the work environment there as well as the tasks he is undertaking.

We are looking forward to seeing some outstanding exhibitions that showcase everyone’s highlights for the term and can’t wait to see what next term has to offer.

Can Construction Build It? Yes, we can!

The Studio School Construction students have been learning how to build mini houses using their skills in framing and flooring. Most students have now completed two weeks of internship with a company in the building industry.

We would like to thank the following businesses for hosting our students:

AR&E Moss Building

B&H Sutherland Builders

GRB Constructions

K. Sales Constructions

Summit Homes

Valley Bricklaying

Zane is pictured here in or large cubby house and Ky with his custom-made dog kennel.

Recently our Studio School Y12 Construction students teamed up with Mr Buz’s Y12 Construction class to pour a large slab of concrete for their picnic table to sit on. The students were exposed to all aspects of the industry including WHS and site planning and preparation.

All our students receive a poster in our Transition space when they leave to full time employment or study. Our most recent recipient to be acknowledged on our “Wall of Fame” is Jack Miles who recently left us after successfully gaining an electrical apprenticeship. Well done, Jack!

Success Spotlight

Earlier this year Liam graduated from the Studio School Transition program to employment at Alfabs Engineering. Since then he has made himself a valued member of the team and his workmates speak very highly of him.

Year 10 BPE Advisory go ape at Taronga

On Tuesday the 8th of June Year 10 Advisory made their long-awaited excursion to Taronga Zoo a reality. The students arrived at Taronga and spent several hours walking around the zoo and seeing the amazing animals that the zoo has to offer.

They also participated in an Animal Encounter. This saw them see animals such as Bilby’s, a ring tail possum, a python, a frog, scorpion and a bearded dragon.

Due to fundraising last year the students were able to donate $150 to the Zoo. It was a great day and the Year 10 Advisory danced on to the bus as they were leaving.

The students are to be commended for the high standard and exemplary representation of KKHS. Well done and they are looking forward to their next adventure.
