ABORIGINAL ED

Kurri Kurri High School hosted over 90 JAECG + AET Leaders from all around our AECG region joined us for a leadership day.  The students learned about Aboriginal Art, Ochre and Symbols for communication with Ms Crooks. Then they learned about Traditional Aboriginal Games with Mrs Robson and Year 10 Big Picture students and finally they played Aboriginal Language games and talked about stories from the past with Ms Blake.

Young Mob program has been running with 20 of our Year 7 students and they have been learning about strong spirit and identity. We have also begun our journey with our older students with Advanced Young Mob with Aunty Yvonne and Aunty Jen.

We have recognised Sorry Day on 26th May across our classes by studying Aboriginal histories as is time to recognise the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the power of saying. Students began developing a dance to the song “Treaty" and will be performing it on our Reconciliation assembly. Big Thank you to Miss Lewis, the students really are enjoying learning and developing dances.

Tuesday 1st June our JAECG executives went to Mount View High School for the Term 2 Leadership Day and participated in a number of learning activities. Students played Aboriginal games, learned about Message sticks and created their own. They also discussed what works at their own school with other school leaders and provided ideas for the Cessnock Youth Centre’s Art Project.

KHS Aboriginal students held a Reconciliation Assembly for the school and explained the importance of all people across this nation to take action to support reconciliation. The students did a lovely presentation explaining why they love being Aboriginal and told their peers what types of actions they could take to remove racism and value each other as individuals.

Congratulations to the JAECG students it has been a huge term and you have all worked tirelessly to support each other.
