Premiers Debating Challenge

Mrs Sams Debating Coordinator

This term the premiers debating challenge has well and truly begun. Kurri Kurri was fortunate to have registered two teams for both stage 4 and 5 this year and the level of skill which each student holds is exceptionally high. The season has begun with a BANG as the first round [topics with an education focus] has been completed and including the second round [based on media] for stage 5.  All students have been eager to participate in a face to face debate, because 2020 resulted in the competition being conducted via zoom.

On Tuesday 25th May, 1 stage 4 and 1 stage 5 team went to West Wallsend High. Both teams were able to get into game mode, as the prepared in the hour time allocation, brainstorming all of the ideas and possibilities for the topics “That we should ban reality television” and “that all students in 9-12 should complete a major project every year”. The teams grasped the topic concept and presented a clear idea of how these problems should be solved. Their rebuttals were concise and were able to justify their decisions by providing a variety of examples from the status quo.

The competition will be running until mid term 3, with KKHS being able to host the exciting event and we will be able to strengthen community connections by going to our local high schools. Each year, the interest continues to grow around debating and the skillset this allows for students to be able to develop by participating in such a rigorous event. I am immensely proud with the level of dedication that every competing student has. I and look forward to the upcoming season.
