FUTURES & CAREERS

MRS SELLERS-FOGARTY

Futures News

It has been a crazy month in careers, with interviews for Subject Selection for Year 10 students to exit interviews for Year 12. We certainly have a diverse range of students who are looking to do amazing things……..

Career Expo

The lead up to Subject Selection has been very busy with over 100 KKHS students in Yrs 10-12 taking the opportunity to explore career and post school options. This is the one place that boasts a mammoth amount of Career information under one roof. From beauty college to defence force to technology, there is not an area of career interest not addressed. Students were overwhelmed with the sheer magnitude of information available.

Speed Careers

Speed Careers is a yearly event on the KKHS calendar for Year 10. Students are rotated around numerous stations and were presented vocational information from numerous business people who were only to happy to share their stories. We even had a few ex students who were quite motivated to tell our students what great opportunities lay in wait for them when they finish school. We are so lucky to have so many businesses in the community who support our school and are willing to give up their time for our students. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thankyou!

Year10 TAFE Excursion

Year 10 students given the opportunity to visit Newcastle TAFE to explore the different faculties and investigate courses. This was a very positive visit with students being exposed to diverse course options from Music to Nursing to Electronics. It is so important for students to take advantage of all opportunities given to explore post school options. I see time and time again where students have totally changed their mindset about what they want to do simply by being exposed to something they had not previously considered as a post school option.

Year 10 University of Newcastle Excursion

Students in Year 10 were also given the opportunity to be ‘inspired to aspire’ with a visit to UoN. Starting off at the Precinct Building in the inner-city students were overwhelmed with the sheer beauty of the learning space. It certainly showed Newcastle at its best with 360 degree views, one would question how any work gets done there as I would just want to look at that view!  Then we were off to Callaghan to be inspired with the students visiting various faculties and talking to numerous UoN ambassadors

The Yes Program

The YES Program is a government funded initiative, run through numerous TAFE campuses. This program has given our Yr10 students numerous opportunities to investigate areas of interest; from Hair and Beauty to Trades, the courses are diverse and numerous. KKHS has over 20 students who have participated in these mini programs. Students gain an understanding of independent learning, and with the experience they gain, it is hope they will be able to have an understanding of their future career pathways or even find out what they don’t like which is just as important.

Interviews for students

It is one of the best parts of my job when I get to interview students about what they would like to do when they complete their studies. I see it as a ‘launching pad’ experience where students talk to me about their aspirations, whether it be university degree, TAFE course, apprenticeship or job interview. Through this interview I support them with strategies and advice on where they are going and how to get there. From resume and cover letter support to UAC preferences, university applications and addressing criteria’s in job applications, it all is a path that can be aided with navigation from a Futures Adviser.
