Senior & Intermediate Sport – Wednesday Feb 24th

Cricket

Our cricketers enjoyed a big day out at Ross Straw Fields on Feb 24th. With our A team defeating Uni High in a close finishing game to win their way through to the Regional finals which took place last week in Reservoir. Thanks to Mr. Mclennan and Mrs. Stirkul for their help with organizing the day.

The Year 9 & 10 team played Montmorency for a position in the regional grand final last week. MGC batted first and batted very well indeed. Amassing over 160 runs between several batters. The girls were just as good with the ball and bowled Montmorency out for under 60 runs – a valiant effort. They will now take an extended break before playing the regional grand final against Northcote in October in order to qualify for the State finals in November. Thanks to Mr. Zekiroski and Mr. Houghton for organising the cricketers at Donath Reserve.

Tennis

Our tennis teams took a trip to Royal Park Tennis Centre and kept the winning theme going at MGC. While all tennis teams had success, our A team won their way through to Regional Finals – defeating Richmond High in emphatic fashion. Well done to Tara Bahramian, Abigail Tarasevych, Madeleine Poon and Maddy Cook who will take go to the regional finals on the 23rd of April (week 1 of Term 2 – Friday). Thanks to Ms. Day for helping our tennis players out too!

Volleyball

A huge day was held at our very own MGC gym for Intermediate and Senior volleyball. Unfortunately, our senior girls didn’t finish the day on top. But it was fantastic to see them enjoying themselves in a competitive competition. We went down to Uni High in the final round robin game 7 points to 15.

The Intermediate volleyballers had a big day out across all games with a solid undefeated winning streak from all games that they participated in. The students won their Pool overall and faced off against Brunswick in the final of three sets. The girls won all 3 sets and booked a place in the regional finals on the 23rd of April (week 1 of Term 2 – Friday). All social teams had a blast in their return to sport and it was fantastic to see the happiness on each other’s faces as they played with their friends for the first time in 12 months. We had 12 social teams compete on the day against 9 others from all schools in our Division. Thanks to Jaimie, Narelle, Mr. Smith and the PE staff for helping assist on the big day.

Softball

Our Softball team did not compete at Division level due to lack of numbers – but instead will go through to regional finals on the 22nd of April.

Year 8 Sport Day – Thursday 4th March

Cricket

The year 8 cricket team ventured out to Princes Park to take on the competition from Inner North schools. We had 2 teams that were both successful last week, along with our Year 9 coaches, Emma and Violet (who are both apart of the Intermediate cricket teams). Our A team defeated Princes Hill Secondary in the grand final by some margin which has secured them a place in the regional finals that are to be held on the 12th October in Term 4. Thank you to Ms. Gurr and Ms. Gu for encouraging the teams on the day.

Tennis

Our Tennis fanatics played their competition at Boroondara Tennis Centre. MGC had 8 social pairs, an A and a B team compete on the day. We were once again successful with our A team winning the Division competition for the day and advancing through to the Regional finals that are to be held in Term 2 – 27th of April. Well done to Mr. Dorney and Mrs. Wilson-Rychner for helping the teams on the day. Congratulations to Genevieve Chia, Sophie Watts, Martina Phan and Imogen Scott-Young on their efforts in making the Regional finals.

Volleyball

Well done to our A & B teams that competed at Brunswick last week. Our two teams were very competitive over the day and our A team narrowly lost to Uni High School. This left a big challenge for our B team, who were in a separate Pool, in a grand final play off against UHS. Our B team defeated UHS to progress through to the Regional finals – both teams will have trials later in the year to determine the team that represents the school at Regionals in Term 4 on the 27th October. Thank you to Mr Steer and Mr. Liu, Esme and Hetty for helping coach our Volleyballers on the day.

A big turn out at MGC for the social volleyball – 21 teams competed in the MGC gym. This was the first time the Year 8’s were able to play Interschool sport at MGC so it was a very special experience. MGC registered 11 teams and it was great to see the improvement and fun that progressed throughout the day. Thanks to all Year 9 & 10 coaches, Ms. Wong and Ms. Seo for helping run our competition with umpiring and scoring.

Softball

The day began at Burnley oval across from MGC. Our Softballers had 2 teams competing on the day in the round robin competition. We once again were successful with both our A and social team defeating Uni High. Our A team has now won the right to play at the Regional finals with the final score of 19-11. They will now play on Tuesday the 27th of April in week 2 of Term 2 at Regional level. Special mentions to Grace Rogerson and Izabela Ignjic for some strong performances on the day. Thank you to our Year 9 & 10 coaches for helping set up and also to Mr. Mclennan and Beth Barrass for bringing the enthusiasm that got our softball teams over the line.

Division Swimming – 2nd March

The day began with 25 students making their way to Fitzroy Swimming Pool on a very cool 19 degree day (not ideal for swimming). However, this did not impact on our swimmers as the swimming team won majority of their events across the day. In fact, MGC did not finish 1st in only 4 events across the whole Division carnival – this was an exceptional effort and a credit to the hard work and skill of our wonderful swimmers. Special mentions to all relay teams who won – both medley and freestyle relays. Individual efforts – Lucy Crouch, Manon Shaw, Charlie Millard, Natasha Lowe, Ciara Walsh and Chantelle Campbell all of who won 3 races or more for the day. A big shout out to Eloise Brown and Alyssa Blair for helping with the results all day and Mr. McLennan for his assistance. A very big thank you to Ms. Cameron-Martin for her professionalism as our swim team manager.
