Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning Report

Engagement
Engagement is a second focus area for Nazareth College as a learning community this year. Student engagement is challenging to define as it is a complex construct influenced by multiple factors. Some of the factors that influence student engagement at school are:
- Teacher factors: teacher interaction style (enjoyment and shared focus, support, responsiveness, directiveness, verbal praise), behavioural and academic expectations held
- School factors: includes physical setting factors (physical layout and arrangement of classroom, sensory factors/noise levels, lighting etc), and consistent and structured approaches to the provision of student support and disciplinary measures
- Student factors: a student’s physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioural state, including health issues and disability, peer relationships
- Family and community factors: a student's residential circumstances, family support for/involvement in education, and relationships with their family
- Curriculum and resources factors: availability and type of learning resources including technology, dimensions of the learning tasks (level of difficulty, interest, meaningfulness to learner), task design, learning goals and objectives, and assessment approaches.
As a staff, we are exploring ways to increase student engagement, including goal setting and feedback.
Student Learning Progress
We are somehow past the halfway mark of Term 1 already, the perfect time for students to reflect on their academic progress in 2021. A key question for any work completed is a simple one: 'Is this my best work?'. For the student who can respond 'Yes', there is a satisfaction in knowing that their learning is on track for a successful 2021. For the student who is unsure in their response, further questions should be examined, such as: What could I improve? How strictly am I sticking to my study timetable? How have I prioritised my learning to ensure a successful year?
Using PAM, parents can check at any time on their child’s progress thanks to the Continuous reporting section. Simply log in to PAM, click on your child’s profile and select “Learning Areas” to see a list of subjects. Clicking on any subject will show you both the upcoming tasks and the tasks with feedback available to view.
The Mid-Semester Reports – a snapshot of student learning application – will be available to parents on PAM on Tuesday 23 March. Parents who have misplaced their PAM login details are encouraged to email the College ICT Help Desk via icthelpdesk@nazareth.vic.edu.au or phone the College and ask for the ICT Help Desk.
