Year 2 Spotlight

Spotlight on Year 2

What a successful start to the year we have had! Students have settled in well to the new straight Year 2 level and have enjoyed meeting new friends, as well as reconnecting with old ones. Everyone had many stories to share about their holiday break and returned to school ready for a brand new year of learning and friendship! We have been thinking and talking about our classroom communities. Students have worked hard to establish their roles and responsibilities in their new learning spaces and have enjoyed getting to know their new peers and teachers.

Reading

In class, we have been establishing the routine of our Reader’s Workshop. Students have enjoyed learning new reading strategies in whole class sessions, building their independent reading stamina and using their reading journals.

Writing

Students have been working on recount writing. They started the year with recount writing about their weekends. It was great to hear about the students’ weekends and for their classmates to learn a bit about each other. They have enjoyed starting their Writer’s Notebook and have begun to fill it with interesting seed ideas.

Numeracy

Numeracy has begun with learning about the things that great maths learners do, such as using concrete materials, trying different strategies, and learning from mistakes. We are developing and refining our counting skills and estimating and trusting the count. Students are busy using their counting skills in a variety of meaningful situations and extending their abilities by counting forwards and backwards from any given number using any given counting pattern. Lastly, we have been learning lots of new and exciting maths games like Greedy Pig, Get out of my House, Mastermind and Unlucky 13.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic, Healthy Me has begun a focus on emotional wellbeing. Students have explored emotional literacy through the RRRRs (Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships) and revisited the Zones of Regulation. They have been enjoying practising the art of mindfulness and will soon be moving on to healthy food choices and water and sun safety.
