School Council Report

The School Council met on 15 February 2021.

It’s now been a full year since School Council has been able to meet in person. We were hoping our first meeting of the year would be at the new Wingrove Street Campus but unfortunately, the snap lockdown put paid to that idea. However, the ease of remote access has shown us that there can be higher levels of flexibility in terms of how Council and its sub-committee’s meet going forward – which will make it more accessible for busy parents and educators.

School Council Role & Members

We’re looking forward to seeing the results of the upcoming nominations and elections for School Council. The Council consults on major school spending and fundraising activities as well as community events and connectedness. All members are also part of one of the various sub-committees around the school meaning that you can have direct insight into environmental and sustainability items, buildings and grounds improvements, policy refinement and community events.

This year we have five parent positions available and I encourage anyone interested to put their hand up – it’s a very rewarding experience.

Camps

After the turbulence of last year, we were very pleased to be able to approve the upcoming Year 4 and 6 school camps. Several School council member  have children attending one of the camps this year and they are all super excited to be able to take part.

Wingrove Street Campus Opening

Some of us were fortunate enough to join Kat Theophanous at the opening of the Wingrove Street campus. It’s a fantastic space and it’s wonderful to see the kids enjoying it at last.  The school and council will continue to look at ways that pedestrian safety can be improved, especially with the new campus crossing arrangements.

FPS Community Events

The Community Committee has been working hard in the background to make arrangements for the school welcome picnic and the Foundation social night. Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions meant these events had to be postponed but, restrictions allowing they’ll go ahead as planned in the coming weeks. It will be amazing to see the school be able come together again on such a grand scale.

80KW Solar Array for FPS

There’s been some exciting work presented by the Buildings & Grounds Committee regarding an 80kW solar array for the gym roof, which would effectively make Fairfield Primary carbon neutral in terms of its energy consumption. The system would offset 100% of the energy the School consumes and feed electricity back into the grid when we’re not using it.  This is an exciting project which sets a great standard for environmental practices within the School – stay tuned for news of its approval by the Buildings & Grounds committee.
