Sport

Year 5 and 6 Sport for Term 2.

The Winter Interschool Sport and Intraschool Sport Program includes: AFL, Handball, Hockey, Netball, Soccer and Teeball.

The Winter Sport program enables students to demonstrate teamwork, organisation and skill in a variety of sports. The eight schools in the Seaside Schools District Interschool Sport Competition compete against each other in Term 2 with the most successful teams in football, hockey, netball, soccer and teeball going on to compete at Division events. Students will need to manage their equipment, demonstrate leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship while enjoying competitive winter sports. Students not allocated to an Inter-school team will compete in Winter Intraschool Sport competition and training at school and at local grounds.

Additional details:

Team selection:

Student preferences will be used to select our teams. Year Six students will have priority for selection for interschool sport, and then Year 5 students may trial for the remaining places. Students not selected for a team will compete in an intra-school competition that will include training drills and games in a variety of sports.

Student numbers in Year 5 and 6 dictate that not all students will be able to participate in inter-school sport, hence the reason why some students will participate in intra-school sport at school. Selection and trials will take place on Friday the 19th March and later if required.

Transport Schedule

Buses need to leave promptly at 8:45am. Students in interschool sport teams will need to be at school at 8:30am on sports days. Students playing at home will also need to attend at 8:45am to assemble equipment and prepare the sports grounds.

Food and snacks

Some events may be double headers. Students will need to take their snack and a named water bottle with them as they will not be back at school before 12:30pm on these dates.

Weekly Timetable:

The Winter Sport timetable is not yet available. These details will be added as a Resource to the event on Compass when the details and schedule are confirmed with local schools.

The interschool sport teams will play 7 games, on Friday mornings, during Term 2 at local venues.

Venues:

Venues may include Donald MacDonald Reserve, Beaumaris Primary and Beaumaris Secondary College or at local schools involved in the competition.

School expectations:

Students selected for an interschool sport team may need to be replaced if they are unable to demonstrate school values, respect, and sportsmanship while representing the school. We are proud of the wonderful example our Year 5 and 6 students set during interschool sport sessions.

Where students are unavailable to play in their interschool sport team due to injury or absence, another member of the squad will take their place.

Consent and Payment

Parents will be advised of their child’s selection in an interschool sport team.

If your child is selected for an interschool sport team, payment and consent is required on the Compass Event prior to the commencement of the interschool sport program.

Mouthguards are compulsory for students playing hockey and football and are highly recommended for soccer. Where possible players should play in blue or white shorts without pockets. All students will need to wear their school sport uniform and may be allocated a numbered jumper/bib for play. The school has shin guards available, or students may bring their own. All equipment issued must be returned or paid for at the end of the season.

You may wish to have a discussion with your child about which sport might suit them best during this program.

Further details will be contained in the Compass event notice once team selections have been completed. Please look for these details and provide consent promptly.

Term 2 Cross Country program.

Students in Years 4-6 will compete in a House Cross Country event and our best runners will go on to represent the school at the District competition later in the term. Currently the date for the District Cross Country is May 31st. Good luck in your running preparation!

Prep

This week the Preps have been learning to read through a range of Reader’s Workshop rotations. Students have completed activities like say it, make it, write it, identifying syllables in words and using the i-Pads to trial our new great reading app “Wushka” to assist them with their reading.

Year One

It’s such FUN to be in Year ONE! Our excursion to Chesterfield Farm was terrific. We dodged greedy camels, made more noise than the farm’s shrieking cockatoo and learnt all about how we need animals. In our Design and Technology inquiry lessons we have built mazes for our future bean seedlings to climb through, on the search for light to photosynthesise. In English we made a ‘Noun Town’ poster and wrote exciting sentences using adjectives. Our favourite maths activity was the skip counting in 2s board game. Now we have Crazy Hair Day and two incursions to look forward to. The fun doesn’t stop!

Year Two

Year 2s have been learning place value in maths this term. They have enjoyed learning new games and have been applying skills learnt during investigation time.  We’d love to know who is playing these games at home too!

Year Three

The Year 3 students have been continuing to research Australian indigenous and native plants. They will soon be designing an indigenous garden that will be planted within the school grounds.

Year Four

We’re making friends with our new pen pals! The Year 4’s have been practising their typing and writing skills by collaboratively working on letters for indigenous students from the Bardi Jawi Saltwater community in Broome. We brainstormed questions we might like to ask and then worked together on Teams to construct one letter using our ideas. We’re really getting the hang of all of the great programs we can use on our laptops.

Year Five

In Year 5 this week, a large focus has been on student voice and agency.  We thought it was fitting to interview some students to find out their highlights for the week.

What were your highlights for the week?

Ethan M – Playing volley during PE, I love working with a team.

Harry R – I enjoy travelling to the softball oval to play different schools every Friday morning.

Eden – Definitely writing my script for my inquiry project dramatisation!

Katia – Helping my group write the script for my dramatisation. We all have lots of great ideas!

Year Six

Last week the Year 6’s thoroughly enjoyed their excursion into the city. They went to the immigration museum and walked along the Sandridge Bridge. They have continued building on their knowledge on Australian events throughout the 20th century during their inquiry rotations this week. Tomorrow, Jake (6H) will be participating in the World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation. To  help support him, we will be having a ‘Crazy Hair Day’ so please participate, remember to bring a gold coin donation!

A friendly reminder that tomorrow the Year 6 students will be participating in Clean Up Australia Day, so please bring along rubber or garden gloves if you have any.
