Musings from the Hub

TIME MANAGEMENT has been the theme this week in the Senior Hub as we have welcomed ELEVATE Education into the College to work with staff and senior students in an effort to be more mindful of how we manage our time. We know that this not only assists us to meet deadlines and be the best we can be but it also contributes to managing our mental health and preventing anxiety attacks.

Staff were prompted to reflect upon how they can introduce and foster time management strategies as a regular, embedded part of their teaching program. Some of the responses are listed below.

Setting deadlines with "mini targets” within these deadlines.
Using a timer for class activities.
Discuss the consequences of not managing time well using other real life examples, eg. cooking.
Chunking tasks and assigning a time limit to complete tasks.
Studying in shorter time frames, such as 25 minutes, reflect for 5 mins then repeat. This is called The Pomodoro Technique and is extremely successful and productive.
Getting students to identify their available 'free' time, and when they find is the best time of the day/night to 'study'.

Each Year 12 student attended a Time Management workshop last Wednesday with a young, bright and dynamic staff member from ELEVATE. ELEVATE presented at the Year 11 and 12 transition camp last year at Coonawarra and like then, student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. I’d like to share some of that feedback with you.

The overall program was very helpful, many great study tips that I can easily build in, especially for those of us that struggle sometimes at school.
You don’t have to study 24/7, its unhealthy.
The session was very beneficial and highlighted simple solutions to common problems faced by students.
Focus on getting the task done, not the time it takes.
It was interesting how to form and use a study group correctly.
How to put time spent procrastinating to work.

We’d like to challenge you to focus on your child’s time management strategies. Do you regularly discuss their learning commitments and deadlines with them? Are they also juggling a part time job? Building their driving hours? Socialising enough, or too much? Spending too much time in front of a screen? Getting enough sleep? Getting enough physical activity? How does their homework schedule fit into the household schedule? Gosh….so much to juggle….its certainly worth a chat isn’t it?

Personally I like the following analogy……take an empty jar, some table tennis balls and some rice. The table tennis balls represent the most important things in the day like sleep, healthy activities, commitment to learning tasks, etc. Put these in the jar first.

The rice represents the other things in life, that aren’t so vital at this stage of a student’s life. Sprinkle the rice into the jar second. The jar will quickly fill up and more will fit into the jar rather than if you put the rice in first. Think about it.

VCAL News

Students from Ms Blackley’s VCAL Kitchen/Garden group take turns each week running the cooking sessions. Last week Shakira Petruccelle’s recipe choice was Butter Chicken, complete with home-made Naan Bread.

Ms Lamble's Community group have been running lunchtime activities for Year 7 students. The students' planned and organised different activities as part of their project work, giving up their lunchtimes once a week.

Congratulations Samuel Turnley

As part of his ongoing community service, Samuel Turnley volunteers his time outside of school to the East Coast Netball association. Sam has been volunteering in the association for three years. He helps time keep, score and supports the umpires by making sure the equipment is ready to go.

Last Monday Samuel was awarded the Most Valuable Club Person at the association for summer 2021! Congratulations Samuel, the College and especially VCAL team are very proud of your achievements.

Senior Clontarf Boys

James Hood, Boris Bryant and Bodey Carr visited and read books to children at Dala Yooro Kindergarten.

James Hood, Ronan Hudson, Boris Bryant and Bayley Croucher (absent) are all employed part time at Bunnings.

VCE Attendance

It is important for students and parents/carers to read the VCE and VCAL Delivery and Assessment Policies on the BSC website.

VCE/VCAL students need to maintain 90% attendance in all classes to achieve their VCE/VCAL certificate. If students are absent they will need to provide a medical certificate or statuary declaration to approve their attendance.

School Uniform

Reminder that students are required to be in full school uniform.

Radio FM 8466

The College Captains host a Webex session to Years 10/11/12 classes Wednesday mornings at 9.00 am. The purpose is to inform students/teachers of important information relevant to these Year levels. Congratulations to the Captains but also to teachers for tuning in each week.

Tutoring
