Term 3 Curriculum Newsletters

Prep

In Term 4, in Literacy, students will continue to develop and enhance their phonological awareness and phonics knowledge to help support and enrich their reading and writing skills. We will use our initial code knowledge of letters and sounds to help us write words with four and five sounds as well as continue working on developing our fluency when reading. In preparation for Year 1, we have begun our bridging units looking at how sounds can be spelt using different spellings. As writers, students are writing different types of complete sentences to share ideas and ask questions. We are continuing to expand simple sentences by adding adjectives and further detail such as ‘when’ and ‘where’. We will also be looking at composing and writing compound sentences using conjunctions such as ‘because’ and ‘but’.

In Numeracy, the students will continue to develop their number knowledge and skills. The topics we will focus on are Division (Sharing), Place Value, Measurement (Money/Time) and Data. Students will also keep revising Addition, Subtraction and Shapes. Students will have the opportunity to connect their learning from different concepts learnt throughout the year to pick the most efficient strategy as mathematicians and problem solvers.

For our Earth and Space Science unit ‘Weather in my World’, we will observe and record characteristics of weather. We will also investigate how weather affects our daily lives, the role of weather forecasts and the strategies we can use to predict changes in the weather. As students take on the role of Weather Reporters in the classroom, they will share their observations and how the weather influences our decisions about what to wear and the things we are able to do.

We ask that you please continue to read with your child every night, practise their handwriting and counting forwards and backwards to 20 and beyond. Please also make sure that your child brings their charged iPad to school every day.

As always, please keep checking Compass and Seesaw for important information throughout the term.

Grade 1

Welcome back Grade Ones to school for an exciting Term 4! During Term 4 we will be learning lots of new things.

In Literacy we are continuing to build our knowledge of letters and sounds, as well as exploring narrative stories with an explicit focus on punctuation and sentence types.

Maths covers a variety of fun topics based on real life problems.  We will explore concepts of division, probability and chance, money, and fractions with hands-on and minds-on activities.

Our Inquiry unit: My Community - Altona Meadows, will focus on local places that are special to us and important within the wider community. We look forward to learning about Indigenous Sites of Significance and about the area in which we live.

Grade 2/3

Term 4 will be a busy and fun time for the Grade 2/3 students. In Inquiry, they will be participating in experiments and activities that develop their understanding of the Earth’s rotation and revolution and how this impacts day, night and the seasons.

Literacy will involve the students developing ideas, drafting and composing narrative texts and exploring various literary devices to engage their readers. Students will also be reading a variety of rich narrative texts and studying the techniques used by authors.

Numeracy this term is focusing on fractions, time and money.

Grade 4/5

We are set for a fantastical term in the 4/5s with a Literacy focus on Myths and Legends. We will study and evaluate their features, including figurative language, themes and imagery. The students will comprehensively plan their own myth or legend, taking time to develop the characters, setting and plot. In order to make an impact on the reader, we will include descriptive language in the form of adjectives, noun groups, adverbs and verb groups. Once our texts are published we will share our work with an audience.

In Maths, our knowledge of multiplication and division will help with our work on fractions and decimals. Students will represent fractions of objects and collections by making models, drawing diagrams and using number lines. We will make connections with decimal numbers and investigate equivalent fractions. There will also be lots of fun Chance experiments as part of our Maths program, and we will discuss our predictions and results using terms such as impossible, unlikely, equal chance, likely and certain.

Rules and Laws – what’s the difference? This term, through our Civics and Citizenship topic, we’ll investigate the three levels of government in Australia (federal, state and local) and find out how laws are passed. We will also look at how we, as citizens, can influence the rules and laws we abide by in our society. Students will continue to develop as well-rounded members of our school community by putting our KEFAR values into action.

The Grade 5s will have a special task to consider in preparing for 2023 – they will have the opportunity to apply for the various student leadership positions at our school; more information to come.

Finally, we will celebrate 2022 with some spectacular performances at our end of year concert. Look out for all the details on Compass and get ready to sing along to some entertaining Disney tunes!

Grade 6

This term in Grade 6 will be busy and packed with many exciting learning opportunities. Throughout our Economics and Business unit, the students will explore the importance of economic and financial decision-making in everyday life. The students will consider the nature of work, the influences on the way people work in today’s society, and potential influences in the future. This unit will culminate in a business related project that is planned, designed and implemented by the students. This project will also cover topics in their reading, writing and mathematics studies.

Additionally in reading and writing, the students are working towards producing letters and memoirs in preparation for their graduation.

In maths, we will be covering concepts in the topics of chance, time, and money.

A major focus of this Term is our preparation for the student's end of year graduation ceremony. As a part of this event, the students will perform a song and dance, as well as presenting speeches about their time as students of AGPS. It is sure to be a fantastic event that will showcase all the hard work and effort these students have put in for the past year.
