National Literacy and Numeracy Week

- parents and families supporting learning

With Rosemary and Natalie

Are you interested in how you can support your child’s literacy and numeracy learning?  We know that parents and families make an enormous contribution to children’s learning development and that the actions you take impact directly on your child’s literacy and numeracy future.

Our intention this week, was to invite you to attend the Educators SA: Literacy and Numeracy Parent and Community Forum by Educators SA - CEASA (Council of Education Associations of South Australia). This free forum is part of the 2019 Literacy and Numeracy Week Festival and is designed for parents and family members of young children.  However, as this article goes to publication, I notice that the event is SOLD OUT! This is both good news and bad news - good news for the event organisers, that community members and parents are keen to attend but bad news for us as a LNPS community, that we miss out on this unique opportunity.  You can however, contact the organiser and ask to be added to the  waitlist  https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/educators-sa-literacy-and-numeracy-parent-and-community-forum-tickets-64589905145 and you will be contacted if more tickets become available.

In the meantime, you are able to access a wealth of resources through the Australian Government - Learning Potential Suite.  If you want to help your child develop their literacy and numeracy skills, and wonder how to find activities that reinforce and build on the concepts and skills your child will encounter in the classroom, then this website will inspire you.

Everything here supports the Australian Curriculum for primary school and is child (and parent) friendly.  Browse by your child’s year level, or search for a topic, and the website will suggest ideas, activities, games and videos you can use to support your child’s learning.

The Learning Potential Suite contains two complementary products: firstly, the Learning Potential Resources ( website) which will help your primary school child with their literacy and numeracy skills using, Everyday Ideas, Practise Together activities, and Practise Online  games and videos. Some resources are offline, some are online, and all support the Australian Curriculum.

Secondly, Learning Potential has ideas to help you support all aspects of your child’s learning, with hundreds of articles covering the early years through to high school. This content is also available through the Learning Potential app.  New articles are regularly added to Learning Potential, so subscribe to the Newsletter, download the app, or visit the website regularly.

Please share your feedback regarding these resources with family and friends, as you support your child’s literacy and numeracy learning beyond the classroom environment.
