Book of the Week

Today You Changed The World                                   by Maggie Hutchings

                    Illustrated by Evie Barrow

Tiny acts of kindness make a huge difference all around us. This is a gentle and touching story that reminds us that the little things we do each day can change the world. It invites children to make change for themselves and for others. (Lamont Books)

Year One Werribee Zoo Excursion

We visited Werribee Zoo as part of our unit of inquiry ‘There are factors that impact the survival of living things and their habitats’. The highlight was the Safari Bus where we saw and rhinos, giraffes, emus, antelopes and more! We learned how these animals protect themselves. For example, how the male emu has black feathers so they guard the eggs at night, and how antelopes fight off predators with their antlers. In Habitat Haven we learned about what wallabies need to survive - there was rope to prevent people from entering their space and water taps for them to drink from. We also helped build shelters out of large sticks to shade them from the elements such as rain and wind.

Prep Inquiry

An exhibition to celebrate our unit of inquiry- How we express ourselves

On Friday 14th October our Prep students celebrated their unit of inquiry ‘How we express ourselves’ by hosting an exhibition that showcased their magnificent artefacts. The artefacts that took on many forms were a creative expression of their learning and feelings about how an appreciation of nature can inspire creativity.   We were impressed by what their young creative minds came up with. They ranged from nature paintings, constructs like dog kennels and bird houses, fishing rods made out of pine cones and branches to native flower arrangements and worm farms.  See above for the beautiful creations.

Prep D children who made dog kennels for Happy, our resident garden dog, tested their kennels to see which he preferred.

Melbourne University Math Competition

This year over thirty students from Auburn South participated in the Melbourne University School of Mathematics and Statistics Research research competition. This involved small groups of students selecting and researching an open ended problem and using mathematical methods to solve it and then present their findings in a creative fashion.

The groups met throughout term three during school time, and some working over the weekend and after school, to complete their entries. The questions were equally complex and intriguing, with everyone's understanding of Pythagoras' theorem, Pascal's Pyramid and very particular fruit salad recipes increasing very quickly.

Congratulations to everyone who came along and worked with their groups, between the sickness of winter and everything else happening in our busy school it was often hard to find times to get together. Big congratulations to those who submitted a final project there were some very impressive posters, reports and presentations submitted.

In assembly on Monday, we will be presenting certificates to those who submitted a project. Additionally, it is with great excitement that I share that the following students from our school achieved the following recognition.

Xavier Lawless – Distinction (top 5-10% of projects)

Ethan So – Distinction (top 5-10% of projects)

James Lee – High Commendation (top 10-15% of projects)
