Tucker Trail Project - Visit by Uncle Tamaru Student Workshop.

Last Friday 9th September, Uncle Tamaru, a Kaurna elder, visited and worked with 2 groups of students from Year 1-6, both ATSI and non-ATSI students. He brought food and drinks for us to try from indigenous plants in the area. He taught us some Kaurna language and we watched a video that taught us all the importance of respect. The workshop is part of an ongoing project to research and plan a Tucker trail and indigenous plant area around the oval.

Lilly, Destiny, Nyxi, Damian, Coorain, Harper, Xavier, Eli and Lulu would like to share some of the highlights with you –

Lilly
I found it interesting learning the Kaurna words for parts of the body. I thought it was cool to try the bush tucker and I liked the lemon myrtle cordial and the quandong jam.

Damian
I enjoyed learning about the Aboriginal Culture and how they protected the land. I liked that some plants helped to slow bushfires down.

Destiny
I thought it was interesting learning about plants that you can eat but also save your life and make you better. Trying new foods was interesting, like quandong jam and lemon myrtle cordial.

Nyxi
On Friday I liked learning about bush tucker and we learned some Kaurna language in song. Uncle Tamaru taught us to say Ngaityalya to greet someone, meaning giving the person your respect and we learned it in song.

Harper
I enjoyed the food and the things we learned. We learned the Kaurna words for parts of the body through playing a game.

Xavier
I liked learning the Kaurna words for parts of the body. I liked the food; the quandong jam, the lemon myrtle drink and the Old Man Saltbush leaves were like chips.

Eli
I really enjoyed it. My favourite was the finger lime drink.

Lulu
I got to try the food and drink; the lemon myrtle drink, the finger lime drink and the quandong jam. I got to learn the Kaurna words for parts of the body.
