Parenting Support

Are you unsure how to support your child to find a balance between screen time and physical activity? Are you concerned about how to support your child’s mental health? Is the world of constant online social interaction for your child overwhelming? Are you finding communicating and connecting with your child more and more difficult as they get older? These (and many more) are all normal concerns that parents have as children grow and develop.

Raising Children - The Australian Parenting website (raisingchildren.net.au) has some excellent information about how to navigate a variety of issues that children will experience as they move from being a preschooler, to school age, to preteen, to teen. Information is broken down into each age group and covers topics such as behaviour, communicating and relationships, development, entertainment and technology, family life, physical and mental health, safety and sleep.

As well as information, there are a variety of strategies, activities and videos to support you in understanding how to best support your child.

In addition to the website, Raising Children also has a facebook page with relevant articles and the opportunity to interact with parents who are having the same challenges.

ReachOut (reachout.com)  is Australia's leading online mental health organisation for young people and their parents. Within the parent section there is information about common concerns that you may have for your child, how to understand what your child might be going through and strategies to support them. Topics covered in this section include stress, peer pressure, bullying, cyberbullying, anxiety and depression. The website also offers information about important skills to build including effective communication, building trust, supportive parenting, self-confidence and coping skills.

If you would like to speak with other families who are also going through the same difficulties there are a variety of forums covering a range of topics.

Reach Out also provides free one-to-one support through a coaching service for parents and carers. You can book into a session by clicking on the ‘one-to-one support’ tab in the ‘for parents’ section of the website and scrolling down to the ‘book a session’ button.
