Maths Olympiad
This year was one of our most successful in the APSMO Maths Olympiad competition. We had four Year Six students - Will Cameron, Freddie Milne, Hartley Johns and Lachlan Reid compete as individuals and as a team. Throughout Terms 2 and 3, the students sat five papers, each containing five problem solving questions, to be completed in 30 minutes. See how you go with question 2 from paper 4:
Alan is removing numbers from a clock face to see whether he can still work out the time. He begins at the number 1 near the top of the clock. He keeps the number 1 and then removes the next number which is 2. He keeps the number 3 and then removes the next number which is 4, and so on, removing every second number on the clock face until only three numbers remain. What is the sum of these three numbers?
Lachlan Reid was our highest scoring student, with a remarkable score of 20 out of 25 for the five competition papers. Lachlan finished in the top 10% of competitors across Australasia. Hartley Johns’ score placed him in the top 25% of competitors across Australasia.
Myrniong Woodlands - Tree Planting Day
On Saturday 5 November, the morning has been set aside for the planting of the Sesquicentennial Myrniong Woodland on the hill surrounding the oval. Families who have purchased a Water Gum or River She Oak can call in between 9.30 am and 12.00 pm. Bring your shovel and enjoy planting your family tree.
Please note that the trees have been sold out. Thank you to everyone who purchased a tree for our final Sesquicentenary initiative.
2023 Student Diary Art Competition
Students from ELC 4 to Year 5 are invited to submit their designs for our 2023 student diaries. We select a piece of art for the front and back of the Early Years (Prep to Year 3) and Upper Years (Years 4 to 6) diaries. Our theme for 2023 is ‘Celebrating Learning’. Students can submit their A4 portrait-oriented artwork to Mrs Povey before Friday 11 November.
2023 Senior Campus Leaders
Last Friday I attended our Senior School Speech Day. It was a spectacular occasion and celebration in our 150th year. The speeches by our Board Chair, Mrs Rosie Merrin, Acting Principal, Miss Kristen Waldron, and 2022 School Captains, Finlay Cameron and Oliver Wortley were of the highest quality. Three Junior School Old Collegians were announced in the 2023 leadership team - Lachlan Rees (Vice Captain), Will Merrin (Berry House Captain) and Tobe Adamson (Learmonth House Captain). We wish all our Senior School leaders well for an exciting year ahead.
Year 12 Students Return
One of many wonderful traditions at our school is the Myrniong Assembly for returning Year 12 students who started their journey at the Early Learning Centre and Junior School. Last Thursday, 13 students made their way up the oak-lined driveway in beautiful spring sunshine, and into the Refectory for a special Assembly. Our Prep students gave each Year 12 a graduation bear, set of photographs, a sprig of Myrniong rosemary, a good luck card they had written and a copy of their Year 5 positive affirmation certificate, written by their peers in 2015. We also welcomed back parents, grandparents and family members of the Year 12s. This is a such a special occasion and we wish all Year 12s the best of luck in their VCE examinations.
Year 6 Bake Sale
On Tuesday, the Year 6 class held a bake sale at lunchtime. There were mountains of food and some spooky Halloween treats. The students had a look of fun choosing from the delicious goods on offer and money was raised for a great cause. In total, we raised $390.85 for the SecondBite charity in Hamilton. Thank you for everyone who helped making the food.

Golf Victoria PS Tournament & HDSA Cricket Blast Competitions
Unfortunately, due to the poor weather conditions, both the Golf Victoria Primary Schools Tournament and the HDSA Cricket Blast competitions which were due to be held on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October respectively have been cancelled. Thank you very much to our senior students, Jack Austin and Henry Bensch, who were due to help with the cricket, as well as the parents who were helping on the golfing day. Fingers crossed for some finer weather soon.
SSV State Athletics
We wish Grace O’Sullivan and Charlie Hindhaugh all the very best of luck as they head to Melbourne to compete at the SSV State Athletics Championships, next Wednesday 2 November. We will be cheering for you here at Myrniong - all the best Grace and Charlie!
