Examination Preparation Starts Now

The Hamilton and Alexandra College is proud of its examination program that builds student capacity to prepare for and sit an examination with confidence. This week, our Year 12 students will have started their final VCE exams with a three-hour English paper on Wednesday. To complete this exam requires patience and perseverance. To concentrate for three hours, to use each minute effectively, to read carefully and write in a coherent and sustained manner is the result of six years of preparation.

The end of year examinations begin in Week 8, just four weeks away. The table below outlines the exam dates followed by our College Step Up program for 2023. In the next few weeks, students will receive a detailed exam timetable and a Student Examination Guide. A copy of these documents will be emailed to parents and guardians.

This week teachers have started to provide students with revision outlines so that they can prepare carefully for each exam. Please start a conversation with your child about how you can help them in the lead up to exams. Consider some of the following ideas:

  • Note exam dates and subjects on a wall planner
  • Purchase an exam revision booklet – one place to collate all notes and practice questions
  • Create flashcards to support revision of key content, key terms, and concepts
  • Use the Student Record Book to allocate time for revision for each subject each week
  • Set specific goals to help you revise and prepare for each subject

If your child is unclear about what the expectations are in a specific subject, then please contact the teacher or mentor for further information.

One of the things that we have observed is that it is often good to have big picture goals for student learning. We want each student to show growth and progress in their learning and to be able to celebrate this achievement. The following video might be a useful place to start: https://youtu.be/n7FQHb0aOsU Sit down and view the video with your child and discuss how setting SMART Goals might help them in their learning journey.

Best wishes for the end of year examinations.
