EMR Year 8 Girls Basketball

Congratulations to the Year 8 Girls basketball team that won the Monash Division and competed at the Eastern Metropolitan Region championships recently. The team were determined and demonstrated outstanding cohesion. The positive sportsmanship and collaboration throughout the day saw the team grow throughout the tournament. The girls competed against Ringwood, Rowville and Templestowe. Although we didn’t win a match the girls were competitive. Well done.

Team members – Julia Hipwell, Sahiba Kaur, Isabel Metaxas, Tayla Meyers, Lara Salih and Gabriela Santamaria Vidarte.

EMR Table Tennis Champions!

This week our Intermediate girls table tennis team competed at the EMR championships. The girls had been super keen and training since winning the Monash Division in term 3; and it paid off! The Brentwood girls won both pool matches against Melba College 6-0 and Mullauna College 6-0, and in the cross over semi finals they played East Doncaster and won 5-1. This set up a grand final against a local school, Glen Waverley SC.

Our team had been nervous all day about playing strong teams at EMR. However, our girls encouraged each other, settled each other, and communicated extremely well throughout each match; singles and doubles. In the grand final against Glen Waverley SC, the girls won 4-2; it was nail biting excitement as we won 3 singles, and 1 doubles match.

Team Members – Kristina Dew, Lulu Yao, Angie Nikolova and Xiao Xu.

Congratulations team you are now off to the SSV State finals! So proud of your achievements!

EMR - Intermediate Boys Table Tennis

On Wednesday 26th October the Intermediate Boys Table Tennis team were at school, when no-one else was here, warming up and preparing for a day of good competition. We arrived at the Croydon and Districts Table Tennis Centre in Kilsyth ready to start.

Our first match was against Norwood SC and we were able to come away with a win 6 rubbers to 0. Our second match was against Bayswater SC with a similar result, 6-0. Our next competitor was tough, Templestowe SC had some very strong players in their team. We won 2 of our singles matches and lost 2 of our singles matches. We went into the doubles and knew we had to win both games to get the number one spot in our pool. However, it was not meant to be, we won one, but lost the other. We ended up equal on rubbers, 3-3, but they had won more games, we ended up losing by 2 games.

It meant that we finished 2nd in our pool and that we would have to play the top team in the other pool in the cross-over semi-finals. In the semi-final we found out we had to play against Vermont SC. The boys dominated in both singles and doubles, and we were able to come away with a win, putting them into the grand-final. Templestowe SC had also won their semi-final, so we knew we had to bring everything to the table in all games.

Our student coaches, Dustin and Jordan arrived after their Year 12 English exam in time to support the boys at a critical point in the day. Their presence was felt, and the boys lifted their games to another level. We won 3 out of the 4 singles matches, a much better result compared to the first time we played them. We wanted to win the doubles to make it a clear win, however, knew that we only needed to win 1 game in the doubles to take the victory. Max and Alex were able to win the first game in their set and at that point we knew we were through. The boys went on to win the match resulting in us winning 4 rubbers to 2.

Rohan, Max, Alex, Kanta and Eric did an amazing job yesterday, I was so very proud of the way they performed on the day. Their ability to play the game is excellent. It is also important to note that their constant encouragement of each other and sportsmanship was a standout. Dustin and Jordan also demonstrated amazing leadership on the day, and in the weeks leading up to the day with the multiple training sessions as well. Well done to everyone, bring on the State Championships. Friday 25th November. Another student free day, perhaps that is a lucky thing for us!
