Debating

The Dudley Cup Finals were held at Duntryleague last Thursday night, hosted by the Orange Rotary Club. Kinross Wolaroi had two teams qualify.

The affirmative team was Sala Ormes-Smith, Anabelle Van Wyke, George Hogg and Ollie Krause

Negative Team, Lulu Clinton, Gretel Sobotta, Alice Scholte and Issy Wong.

The teams put on an impressive display arguing the topic that, ‘Today's youth is a lost generation'.

It was a very close debate between the two teams with the affirmative team winning on the night.

Sport

A reminder to all students that they are expected to arrive and depart both training and games in the correct attire. The wearing of non-Kinross Wolaroi clothing is not allowed at our sport training sessions or games. To aid with this the school shop is now stocking a range of affordable training attire. Also, a reminder that we have moved into the new sporting uniforms. The information relating to each sport is available on The Hub. Please ensure that you are aware of the requirements for your sport and have purchased the correct attire for games and training.

Australian Women’s Rugby 7s

The School's Rugby Community has been treated to an amazing experience this week. The World Cup winning Australian Women’s 7s team has been in town and have used Kinross Wolaroi School as a base for their pre-season camp. The team has been conducting sessions in our weights room, the school pool and on the Ex-students field. Our Girls Rugby 7s players were invited to watch an open training session, where 15 of our boys trained head to head in a 30 minute open scrimmage against these world class athletes.

Our Year 10 PASS students were treated to a coaching seminar from Olympic Gold Medal winning coach Tim Walsh and our Junior School students ran through Rugby 7s clinics with the Australian 7s players.

As we continue to build our Rugby Program, we are very thankful for these opportunities. I would like to thank our students for their enthusiasm, the teaching and clerical staff for their support, and a big thank you to our Grounds staff who did an amazing job getting our fields in outstanding shape. Thank you to everyone.

Best Wishes,

Matt Tink

ISHE 2022

Finally, an event that wasn’t cancelled due to the rain!

Ten students from our Equestrian team braved the trip to Tamworth that normally takes just over five hours but took some up to seven hours with road closures, detours, and horrendous road conditions. Thankfully the sun shone, and the facilities were amazing.

The Inter-Schools Horse Extravaganza (ISHE) is open to primary and secondary school students and the event offers a wide range of disciplines, including – showjumping, one-day event, sporting, show riding, dressage, combined training, para dressage, campdraft and working horse challenge.

With so many events cancelled this year everyone seemed to head to Tamworth, with over 500 competitors attending. The majority of competitors were in Years 8-10 as were our students, so to finish in the top 10 in any event was sensational.

Our team consisted of Audrey Pearce, Isabell & Lillian Pearce, Mellie White, Georgia Zatta, Ava Rouse, Hannah Goodsir, Claire Nelson, Jess Taylor and Lucia Varian.

The girls showed great team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the four days. As the team manager I was extremely proud of the way they conducted themselves and looked after their horses. Every horse was turned out immaculately as you can see in the photos.

We look forward to encouraging a few of the primary school riders to join us next year.

Highlights were:

Jess Taylor - 1st CT60, 8th 1B & 9th 1C dressage

Hannah Goodsir - 2nd EVA 65cm, 2nd 80cm showjumping

Georgia Zatta - 3rd 90cm showjumping, 7th CT80

Lilian Pearce - 2nd WHC, 2nd Stock rider, reserve champion 14years sporting

Isabell Pearce - 6th WHC, 1st Stock rider

Claire Nelson - 8th 1C dressage

KWS team of 4 riders 2nd – Jess, Audrey, Hannah & Claire

Laura Chudleigh

Laura Chudleigh competed for Kinross Wolaroi at the NSW All Schools Championship, competing in Long Jump and High Jump. The event was held at SOPAC on 24 - 27 September.

Laura placed 6th in Long Jump and set a new PB in High Jump, in which she placed 4th on count back. Fantastic results to end the representative athletics season.

A great experience for Laura. Well done.

Athletics Training

This term we will be offering athletics sessions for interested students. Sessions will run on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon and on Friday lunch times. If you are interested, please come and see Mr Priest in the sport office for additional details.

KWS 1st Girls Basketball

Well done to our 1st girls’ basketball. They have made a fantastic start to the season with two close wins. Last week they came away with a one-point win in a back and forth tussle. It was really pleasing to see the team fight through to the end and ensure that they got the win.

This week was a different style of game. Down by a significant margin in the first quarter the girls regrouped and then set about closing the gap. It took until the last thirty seconds of the game to get in front.

ISA Tennis Report

We welcomed St Stanislaus’ College, Scots All Saints College and Blue Mountains Grammar School to Orange this weekend for our first round of ISA Tennis. Although the weather looked ominous and we had some rain delays, all matches were played and it was a competitive day.

Our Odds and Evens teams played against Scotts All Saints College this week. The Odds played very consistently, winning against their opponents 15 sets to 4. The Evens had tough competitors, with a lot of tie-breaks being played to determine the winners in both singles and doubles matches. Evens narrowly lost 8 sets to 14.

A special mention must go to the following students for making their debut in the team this weekend:

Sam Balcomb

Alice MacDonald

Milli Mackay

Ashton Quinn-Woonton

Basketball

It has been a great start to the basketball season so far and it has been great seeing all the teams in the new basketball uniform and doing they're best for their respective teams.

A big shout out to the two 1st teams that have won their first two games. The girls team is playing in the women’s competition and are definitely holding their own. The boys are playing in the high school boys competition in 1st grade.

The 1st girls are coached by Gerald Power and seem to be travelling well. It's great seeing them smiling enjoying themselves and being competitive when it counts. Well done to all the girls for the great start to the season. Keep it up.

Round 1 saw the girls win convincingly and the second round saw a big effort with the girls coming back to win by a point in the dying stages of the game. Best on court performances to Jess Tudor and well done to a few of the younger players in the team for their efforts against women.

The 1st boys team are coached by Jarrad Klose and they began where they left off form last year. With the boys spending a season playing together they are aware of there strengths as a team and the areas of improvement that need to work on.

In Round 1 they won convincingly and in Round 2 it was much closer. Again, it's great to see a few younger boys earning the right to wear a 1st uniform and they have definitely bought something to the team. Its has been great to see the boys training hard and reaping some of the rewards for their efforts.

Well done to all teams in the competition and looking at the results it seems that as a school we are competing well in the Orange Basketball Association. Please remember that it's about the process of improving, playing to your potential and most of all enjoying being with your peers.

Well done for a great start to the season,

Lee Taylor, MIC Basketball

Water Polo

On Thursday 27 October the Barracudas (1st) played an excellent game against the Platypus Gold. Despite the wet weather we were able to maintain good spirits in the lead up to and during the game. All players gave it their all with special mention of Emily Clunas the youngest member of 1sts, being only in Year 9. Despite the stiff competition our team was able to stay ahead the whole game for a final score of 8-4 in our favour. The excellent Kinross Wolaroi offense was led by Ned Jones and Gordon Suthers who played off each other spectacularly to score a majority of the goals.

Well done to all teams on a fantastic start to the season.

Cricket Report

Week 2 Term 4

Cricket Season is upon us once again! The persistence of the poor weather continues has played havoc with the start of the cricket season. Unfortunately, Round 1 of the Junior and Round 2 of the Senior season was washed out, but thankfully all teams have been able to play some cricket over the first two rounds of the competition.

We thank both the Orange Council and our own wonderful Grounds staff who continue to battle the constant rain to provide facilities for our students to play and train on each week.

I look forward to seeing you all around the grounds (in the sun!),

Regards,

Reports

1st XI vs Centrals - Round 1

Kinross Wolaroi 1st XI started off their 2022/23 campaign facing Centrals at Anzac Park. We won the toss and elected to bat first aiming to set the tone for the game.

We started off the innings with W Waterson and T Patton opening the batting, W Waterson showing intent from the beginning finding boundaries early in his innings and throughout. Waterson was then joined at the crease by D Shepherd who quickly established himself nicely at the crease. Waterson was then dismissed by a lucky catch at 1st slip for a well-made 41 as Shepherd continued on with his innings falling just short of the half-century being dismissed on 47. H Brazier in year 9 on his 1st XI debut also played a pivotal role in establishing a defendable score with his chanceless 38 helping Kinross reach 179 after their 40 overs. With a few very handy individual performances and many starts throughout the batting line-up helped us reach a defendable total of 179.

C Condon and W Prowse opened the bowling and with the ball zipping around in the wind managed to have them 2 down after the first 9 overs. Charlie Andersons superb efforts in the field led to his direct hit run out and Kinross Wolaroi's next wicket. Tight swing bowling from the captain Harry Priest and a solid catch from Dudley Shepherd took Centrals to 4 down just after drinks. Charlie Anderson broke a promising partnership at the end of his quality 7 over spell (1/36) from a Liam McKenzie catch. Archie Baldwinson joined the party, crashing into the stumps for his wicket leaving him with 1/14 from 4. Walter Prowse returned for a fiery second spell, taking two wickets in consecutive balls to finish with 2/33 from 8, and then Condon taking the final wicket of the game thanks to a terrific catch by Liam McKenzie.

A top all round fielding performance throughout the match paved the way for a good win in the first game of the season, with plenty more to come.

2nd XI vs Gladstone – Round 1

Kinross Wolaroi were sent in to bowl after we lost the toss. We were playing on a synthetic wicket and the sun was out, so we did not mind bowling. Cavaliers started off slowly, but the runs started flowing in the last 15 overs of the game. Jack Harding kept us in the hunt, and was rewarded with a  hat-trick and a 5-for. Our fielding was a bit below where we would like it to be, and will be something we focus on next week.

We were sent in with a target of 134 to chase. We lost an early wicket but a partnership of 75 between Tom Nock and Jamie Anderson helped steady the ship. Then a flurry of wickets fell costing us vital time and runs, and in the last 2 overs we needed 10 to win. Taking the game into the final over, we ended up going down by 2 runs in a thriller. It was a great way to start the season.

Notable batting performances: Jamie Anderson (47) and Tom Nock (50)

Notable bowling performances: Jack Harding (6 – 22 including a hattrick) Charlie Zell (1-12)

Thanks to Tom Nock and Mr. Bowman for their help on the day.

Jamie Anderson

Centenary Cup Co-Captain

Kinross U14 Sixers vs U14 Thunder – Round 2

The Sixers were outplayed by the Thunder in challenging conditions on Saturday.

Batting first – always an advantage no matter what the conditions – the Thunder made 93.

The Sixers bowled and fielded well for the most part. Standout performances with the ball came from Sid Weston (4 -0 -11- 3) and Marco Orme Smith (4 – 0 – 8- 1) but Henry Luelf and Hugo O’Brien also bowled well. These efforts were well supported by good catching. The Thunder deserve credit for the way that they kept up the pressure through some sharp running between the wickets which was especially important in the wet conditions and the way that they seized on anything short from the Sixers attack.

In reply the Sixers were dismissed for 49 in 22 overs. The Sixers lost early wickets – at one stage they were 4/12 – but had recovered somewhat to be 4/33 by drinks. The chief destroyers of the early part of the innings were Sam Knox who finished with 3 for 10 and Matt Bowman who finished with 1/9. The Thunder did not relent after the break and Harry Miller (4 -1- 5- 0) and Reggie Staniforth (2 – 0 – 2 – 2) kept up the pressure in the second half of the Sixers innings. The Sixers only got the runs they did thanks to some calm batting from Charlie O’Brien and a brave effort from Bede Leighton.

Well done Thunder.

The Sixers will be back next week but need to work on cutting off short singles in the field and making sure that they bat with greater application.

Thanks to the parents who came along to support the players and special thanks to those that helped with umpiring and scoring. Mr O’Brien certainly went above and beyond in umpiring in monsoonal like conditions in the second innings.

Round 3 sees the Sixers take on Orange CYMS Green at Anzac Park.

Mr. Bruce Kerrige,

U14 Sixers Coach

Under 15s v Centrals – Round 2

On a rainy Saturday morning, Kinross lost the toss and were sent into the field. The first six overs Charlie Miller and Will Younghusband tied up both ends, taking 4 wickets for just 5 runs. Centrals ended up getting all out for 77 runs thanks to strong catching from Lachie Medway (2 catches) and great team fielding effecting 3 run-outs. Best bowling for the day was Will Younghusband (3/14) and Rob Heath (2/2).

Our opening partnership of Ashton Nock and Rob Heath saw off the dangerous opening bowlers, before Rob was dismissed for 4. Ashton batted nicely and continued to 50*, while Kieran Vernon got 17 not out. Our work-on for the week is high catches, as we put some down.

Thanks to Oli Wilson for assisting with scoring this game.

Will Younghusband
