Basketball

20/10/22: Back in Business

As the inventor of basketball, James Naismith states, “basketball doesn’t build character, it reveals it”.

Thursday October 10 allowed for plenty of revelation for the Years 5/6 boys basketball team. The sportsmanship, determination and teamwork displayed from these fine young gentlemen has established a high standard on which they can only continue to build upon.

With one training session under their belts and a promotion into the High School competition games, the ability of the Lakers to implement defensive strategy was remarkable. A quick first quarter saw the Lakers behind by a small margin, but the strategic chat and water break ensured this champion team built momentum right until the final buzzer to solidify their spots as real contenders for the cup at the end of the season.

As full time echoed through the courts, a three-pointer couldn’t quite save the day. But as the legend goes, always back the underdog.

The Lakers look forward to a dominant season ahead.

Cricket

The wet weather has hampered the start to the cricket season somewhat, however our U11’s have been able to get one game in.

KWS U11 White started their season with a victory over Orange City Crusaders. Prayan Dulal and Louis Blyth top scoring with the bat, leading us to a total of 127 from their 20 overs. In reply, Orange City managed 102 off their 20. With Louis Blyth (3 overs, 1 maiden, 1/6) and Charlie Haydon both picking up wickets (3 overs, 1 maiden, 1/15).

KWS U11 Blue v CYMS

This week was a most promising start for the young U11 blue team, you wouldn’t have known we hadn’t had any training sessions yet! Batting first, we started slowly but perhaps knew the conservation of wickets would allow for a late surge towards the back end. Credit must go to CYMS who’s bowling was accurate and fielding high class. 2 direct hit run outs left us in some trouble. Marlon and Janagan were courageous at the top of the order, seeing off the new ball. Jarvis then upped the run rate with some clean ball striking and quick running between the wickets. Finlay, Digby and Jarvis were joint top scorers as we finished the innings with a respectable total of 85.

In reply, CYMS never looked completely comfortable but crept their way to the total nonetheless. Accurate bowling from Sophia and Harriet made runs hard to come by. The pick of the bowlers for Kinross Wolaroi were Digby (3 overs, 2 maidens, 1/2) and Jarvis (2 overs, 1 maiden 3/3). Special mention must go to Janagan who volunteered to keep wicket for the first time and did a marvelous job behind the stumps!

We look forward to getting stuck into some skills on the training paddock and hoping for some dry weather as the weeks progress!
