STEAM Week Program: Year 5 - 8 Students

As the school year concludes Year 5 – Year 8 students will embark on an exciting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) Week Program. This program is designed to engage students in a variety of integrated educational and developmental activities related to these important disciplines. The program will encourage students to think broadly and creatively about real world problems and consider how their skills can be applied to a variety of different STEAM projects.

The program is also designed based on the incorporation of Collaboration, Communication and Creativity competencies. These three Cs are part of the 21st Century Skills which help students develop confidence, leadership and social skills. All of these traits are an important part of student growth and development at Shelford.

Students will work in a variety of groups across the week, with some sessions including Year 5 - 8 students, other sessions enable Year 5 and 6students or Year 7 and 8 students to work together, and finally some sessions will be dedicated to allowing students to spend time solely with students in their own year level. The opportunity to mix with students from other classes and year levels enables students to deepen their community connections at Shelford and to learn from one another through informal peer mentorship.

Wednesday provides the students an opportunity to explore one of a variety of excursions - Year 5 and 6 Werribee Zoo, Year 7 Melbourne Zoo, and Year 8 Science Works, all with a focus on STEAM initiatives.

This STEAM Week program is developed with the expertise and support of the relevant Heads of Faculty and teaching staff and together this provides for a fantastic end of year for the students.
