Year 8 Theatre Production

This semester, students have been working hard on developing their performances for Theatre Production. At the end of Term 3, they were allocated groups and asked to create a 10 to 15-minute performance responding to the stimulus, ‘The Rise of Social Media’. During the first few lessons, students explored a range of images and engaged in activities which were used as a starting point to develop ideas and scenes for their performance. They were encouraged to discover creative ways to utilise the performance space and incorporate a range of movement. They were also required to include verbatim theatre; a form of documentary theatre which is based on the spoken words of real people.

Once the groups had made some progress on their devised ensemble, each group member chose a production area that they would be responsible for. This included set and prop design, costume design, lighting design, sound design and the role of the director. They were required to liaise with their group and discuss their ideas with fellow designers from other groups which assisted them in making design choices that would effectively communicate meaning and enhance their performance.

The Year 8 students were dedicated and enthusiastic in their approach to the development of their production. Each group investigated both the positive and challenging aspects of social media and presented their ideas in an imaginative way. With limited time, students managed to create and run their performances on their own which meant operating the sound and lighting for other groups during the performance. I was vey proud of the way each of the Year 8 students conducted themselves throughout the entire process and thoroughly enjoyed working with them this semester.
