Year 8 Mission to Mars

On this full day excursion our Year 8 students worked as a team to use their problem-solving skills to successfully complete a geological survey of the Mars surface. Students wore specially designed spacesuits and acted as astronauts, mission controllers and research scientists. Mission Control officers communicated via radio to the astronauts on the surface and were responsible for their safety and the success of the scientific mission.

Astronauts collected their equipment, de-pressurised in the airlock, and stepped out onto the martian surface and collected real soil and rock samples, drilled an ice core, conducted a thermal survey and measured seismic activity. After returning to earth, students analysed their samples and undertook further scientific investigations in the laboratory. Thank you to the following teachers for their participation in this years Mission to Mars; Ms Altinidis, Ms Ashwell Callaway, Dr Chau, Ms Gu and Mr Vasic.
