Michael X (Year 11)

Competition Swannie Award Winner for Best Victorian Debater

At the end of 2021, Michael Xiao was awarded the Debaters Association of Victoria’s Competition Swannie Award for the best Victorian debater in the Year 10 division from across all 20 regions of the DAV Schools Competition.

Michael had already been named as the Swannie Award recipient for the Glen Waverley Region, but at the DAV’s final awards night he was announced as not only the best performing Year 10 debater in our region, but across the entire state.

Receiving a Competition Swannie Award is a tremendous honour. Almost 10,000 students from across the state compete in the Schools Competition each year, and only four debaters – the top scoring speaker in the Year 12, 11, 10 and 9 divisions – receive this accolade.

Congratulations to Michael for this outstanding achievement!

Anjali S (Year 12)

Lions Youth of the Year

Congratulations to Anjali Sharma, who was named the 2022 Youth of the Year by the Lions Club of Waverley.

The Lions Youth of the Year award returned this year after being cancelled in 2021 due to Covid lockdowns. The award recognises young people who make a positive contribution to their community, are actively engaged with contemporary issues and demonstrate excellence across education, community service, sports and public speaking. Competitors have to submit a written application, undertake an extended interview where competitors are quizzed about their community involvement and knowledge of current issues, present a prepared speech on a topic of their choosing and two impromptu speeches in response to unseen questions.

Anjali spoke passionately on the need to give young people a voice in political issues. As an important first step to addressing this, she argued that lowering the voting age would help to lift the public’s view of young people’s political views, address youth disenfranchisement and alleviate youth disillusionment at being frozen out of the political process.

She will now proceed into the next round of regional finals, which are scheduled to be held in mid-March.

Victoria M (Year 8)

Ameb Piano Prize

Congratulations to Victoria M in Year 8 who received impressive awards in the Ameb Piano Certificate of Performance. She was the first place winner and exceptional young talent special prize winner for the 2021 International Music Competition “Rome” Grand Prize Virtuso. She also won first prize and exceptional young talent special prize Winner of the 2022 “Golden Classical Music Awards” international competition.

Victoria's achievement in piano performance meant she given an invitation to perform at the Teatro Studio (Parco della Musica) in Rome, Italy. Unfortunately this opportunity has been rescheduled due to covid and travel restrictions.

However, Victoria received another performance invitation in New York, and in this year she can choose perform at the Weill Recital Hall in NYC.

An outstanding achievement! Well done, Victoria.
