Huntingtower Careers News

I am thrilled to have joined the Huntingtower community this year. I am very much looking forward to working with students and their families to assist the students in planning and preparing for their first steps beyond school.

Over the past few weeks, I have been meeting individually with Year 12 students to discuss their plans for 2023 and to check prerequisite subjects and other entry requirements for tertiary courses of interest. The discussions have been very productive, and I thank the Year 12 students for the preparation many have done in advance and the questions they arrive with. No careers meeting is ever the same!

The Year 10 students will be completing their Morrisby Profile over two of their Futures lessons later this term. This profile allows us to see their attributes and interests and the report they are provided with will form the basis of the discussions I will be having with each student throughout Term 2. During these meetings we will be identifying the range of careers that has been suggested by the Morrisby profile and considering subjects that might be selected at Year 11. More information regarding the Morrisby profile will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Developing an understanding of the jobs market and the transferrable skills that are required in the world of work form significant parts of the career planning process. During the Year 11 Futures lessons, students will be examining potential career interests and identifying and developing these transferrable – or soft – skills. They will also look into the role that social media can play, both positively and negatively, in their education and future careers.

Please see the Future Pathways page on Firefly for lots of material regarding careers planning. Here you will find weekly careers newsletters containing important information regarding courses and scholarships. These newsletters are of particular interest to Year 12 students and their families. Firefly also has many links to external sites that can assist students and families to further understand the range of tertiary courses on offer and their entry requirements.

Finally, we are very excited to have recently launched the Huntingtower Careers page that also contains a vast array of resources for students and families across all year levels. Students in Years 10-12 will have access to a portal where they are able to develop their careers e-portfolio throughout their Futures lessons. Over their upcoming Futures lessons, students will be shown how to log in to the website and add documents such as their curriculum vitae and cover letter. We hope that this resource is of great benefit to all students in their career planning.
