Principal's Report

Mrs Clare Healy

‘People have a better day because I am here and part of the school team.’

Living Well, Learning Well Framework

What a wonderful thought that each and every one of us makes our community better because we are part of the team. It is such a simple way of being but it makes such a big difference. How can we make a person’s day better? How could we let others know we are part of the team? What does the O’Connor team look and sound like?

A team is a special group of people who are committed to each other. They are focused on doing their personal best, supporting each other and ensuring everyone knows that they are proud to be part of the team. I am proud of our students and the way they have come back to school this year. We are on a journey of renewal and growth which is natural as new people join a community. I believe that our students can achieve success as they are as good as any students in the state. Success will look different for each student however it always comes down to their belief in themselves and their team. When we work together there is nothing we can't achieve - ‘Together Everyone Achieves More!’

At O’Connor we are blessed with a tradition of past students who have embodied these values. Last Wednesday we paid tribute to the service and sacrifice of Ellie McGlade. Year 12, led by Mr Andrew May honoured Ellie McGlade and the team of nurses who paid the ultimate sacrifice on Bangka Island during World War II. These traditions and values have been entrusted to our current students and staff. We are challenged to be part of the College team and to ensure the high standards set by our past students are honoured.

I was given some wonderful news this week regarding a Year 12 student Lara Windred. Lara entered a prestigious international essay competition to win one of twenty scholarships to the University of choice - Oxford or Cambridge Universities in the United Kingdom. There were thousands of entries into this competition. Lara won one of the scholarships and will be studying a Law School Summer Course at Oxford University during the July holidays. It is wonderful to know that Lara’s dedication to her learning has made us all better. Lara has reminded us that we can all achieve international success if we strive to be better. On behalf of the O’Connor community, we wish Lara every success.

As we begin week 5 we are hopeful that the restrictions of the last few weeks will be eased. Our College community would like to thank everyone for their support and patience. We hope to welcome our parents and carers back into our community once more. We will keep you updated on any easing of restrictions in the coming days.

God Bless,
