Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Michael Starr
How long have you been teaching at the school?
This will be my 5th year teaching at Heathmont College.
How many subjects have you taught since you've been here?
Since starting at Heathmont College, I have taught 6 different subjects. These include Media, Drama, Visual Arts, Visual Communications, Digital Technology and Music.
What is your favourite subject to teach?
My favourite subject to teach is definitely Year 12 Media!
You’ve had some very exciting life events happen recently! Tell us about what you’ve been up to:
2021 was a big year in my household for sure! In March I got engaged to my gorgeous fiancé Rhiannon! In May we found out we were pregnant! And then on the 20th January this year (2022) my beautiful daughter, Octavia Rose, was born. We are also looking forward to getting married later this year.
What did you do before you started at Heathmont?
Before Heathmont, I had many different jobs and studied a few different things.
I have worked in every aspect of the hospitality industry such as cook, bar tender, TAB/Gaming Room attendant and manager. I was also a labourer in a furniture factory.
Before studying to be a teacher, I started a degree in commerce and then transferred to a diploma of Media and Communications.
Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher after searching around for what I might want to do in life, I realised I really enjoy helping people better their selves. I was lucky enough to have teachers that never gave up on me and that is what I aim to do with all of my students.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy going to the movies, TimeZone, spending time with my fiancé and daughter, go for walks, spending time with friends and playing video games.
What are some of your favourite things about coming to school every day?
I love seeing my students grow as people and find themselves. I also enjoy the conversations I have with staff and students in passing, sometimes the small things are all I need to make me smile.
