The Principal's Pen

Professor Trevor Cooling from Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK recently asked a group of leaders of Western Australian Christian schools “what is knowledge?” Is it a fixed body of understanding that needs to be passed on from teacher to learner or perhaps a blank slate that can be constructed according to the views and needs of the community? He proposed rather, that knowledge is contestable but true, something that needs to be interpreted with critical thinking and wise judgement.

Professor Cooling’s research into Christian education wonderfully supports the journey of Cornerstone. Inquiry learning, asking searching questions to gain deep understanding engages our learners in this interpretation of knowledge. It continues to excite our staff as we see how our students tackle their own learning.

And we can approach our knowledge of God in the same way. He asks us to “taste and see” that he is good. That’s a journey of knowledge that we are all on together.
