Otway Basin Excursion

Scientists from the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) ran 3D workshops for nearly 200 of Warrnambool College's Year 8 students this week about the rich geology underneath our feet.

We found out how much geology effects our everyday lives and learned about rocks, minerals, tectonic plates, volcanic activity, sedimentary basins, energy resources and why GSV is studying the Otway Basin.

We were able to have a look at GSV's 3D models of the rock structures that lie deep below Victoria.

The scientists also gave us some examples of where their careers have taken them, from Saudi Arabia to Antarctica, and from Western Australia to here in south west Victoria.

GSV has located a  team of scientists in Warrnambool until mid 2020.  They are assessing the potential for new discoveries of gas (both offshore gas and onshore conventional) in the Otway Basin.
