Year 3 Term 2 Newsletter

Dear Families,

Welcome back! We hope your Easter break was restful yet exciting. Last term seemed to go by in the blink of an eye. We have enjoyed getting to know the children and implementing the routines and expectations of  Year Three. The children have settled incredibly well into their new classes and responsibilities.

YEAR THREE CAMP

In Week one, we attended Briars Camp in Mount Martha. It was the student's first overnight camp and the children were extremely excited. Camp was a great experience and it strengthened the relationships and independence of the students. The staff at the Briars were very impressed by Black Rock P.S. students and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

MATHEMATICS

During Mathematics this term, emphasis will be placed on developing strategies to solve word problems and consolidate number and place value. Students will also continue to build upon their understanding of multiplication, division and place value. Telling the time, investigating angles, symmetry and location will also be explored in the classroom.

ENGLISH

This term we will be examining a variety of persuasive,  narrative texts and  Australian poetry. Students will be provided with activities that aim at identifying the important features of these text types. They will work towards incorporating such features into their own writing pieces and will complete various ‘Big Writes’ throughout the term. News Reports will also continue. Please see the News Report timetable sent home for upcoming topics.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students build through the school curriculum. In the lead up to NAPLAN, teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

INQUIRY UNIT– Plants in Action

This term our Inquiry topic is ‘Plants in Action’. Students will be investigating life cycles of plants, the properties of seeds in different forms, flower and fruit development and plant growth. We will incorporate hands on experiments, theoretical tasks and groups activities. To reinforce the unit of learning, students will be attending a Mad About Science incursion about ’Living Things’ . We will also be visiting ‘Edendale Farm’ on Friday 22 June leaving just after 9am & returning to school by about 3pm. We would appreciate some parent volunteers to assist us on the day - please let your classroom teacher know. Please also note that a current Working With Children Card is required for parents to come on the Excursion. This Working With Children Card is to be submitted to our Office on the day.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS

Just a reminder that from Year Three, the ‘Student of the Week’ awards are given without parent notification, so there is an element of surprise  for our students.
