Writers' Workshop

Students in Years One and Two are currently enjoying a workshop approach to our writing lessons. In Writers' Workshop, students work through writing as a cycle. This starts with choosing a writing 'seed' - something that gives them an idea. Examples of seeds might include interesting pictures, tickets or brochures from places they have been, small interesting objects they have found, or things that are personally significant to them. They then use their Writer's Notebook to 'sprout' the seed - this means, choosing a brainstorming technique (for example, "I see, I think, I wonder") to generate some ideas, using the seed as a prompt. Finally, students choose a text type (such as a story, poem, procedure etc) to create a piece of writing using some of the ideas they have brainstormed.

Why not help your child see what seeds they can find at home?
