Year 11 Studio Art

As we round out the year, I would like to share a gem of a unit created specifically for Home Learning. Students in Year 11, Studio Art did a ‘click’n’collect’ of materials, including a wooden panel needed to complete this work. There was an opportunity to take advantage of their surroundings and create a reflective task, one that focussed on their home, their community, their identity. They had to depict a ‘landscape’ that captured the idea of ‘my place’. There were ten criteria, including the use of mapping, contour drawing, sound drawings, realism (only in one part), soft wash techniques and more. Their responses were quite personal, as they worked through their ideas. Below are small snippets, quotes from written statements for planning that demonstrate some of their thinking.

This piece is being created to represent me and what I consider home as well as all the things that I love; lately lockdown has had me in my room a lot more, so I want to incorporate stuff from my room as well as my house. In the concept of my 'place' I want to add in pieces of me and my identity and who I am as well as my family.    Claire M

I plan to create a base wash of greens and muted browns which will flow across my panel. I feel that these colours represent my suburb. Due to completing this task at home, I found a great appreciation for my surroundings. I wanted to convey this feeling into my artwork…...I want to reference my house's Queen Anne Architectural style; therefore, I would like to include a perspective drawing of the pivotal bell tower. This physical aspect of my house always reminds me of home, it expresses to the viewer the place where I can go for comfort while signifying a place where I have grown to become the person I am today, representing my morals and values.  Karla S

Including a map of my suburb and the iconic trestle bridge is important to me. I will use an overlaying technique so the elements are over the top of each other and are seamlessly hidden, to add a depth to the piece, the closer the viewer looks, the more they will be able to notice. A wash technique with water colour could be a potential idea to create the sunset effect across the whole wood panel whilst paying homage to the tree within my backyard. I would like the focal point of my piece to be the tree within my backyard as the elements of me can branch off, creating a sense of symmetry.  Monica C

Creating a wood landscape that represents ‘my place’ can erupt many concepts. When I think of my place as simply a concept, I think of who I am, I think of things that constantly surround me and how they make me, me. When brainstorming ideas for this assignment I should think of the macro views I see, such as my house, garden, local parks and major buildings. On top of historical landmarks, micro views, like indigenous lands, specific plants and objects inside/outside……...Adding a specific point of view such as a bird’s eye view can reflect the way I’m looking down towards my past that has made me who I am from experiences and memories as well as Rhonda and my Grandpa looking down at me growing as a person. Items such as rings that I wear every day and trees that I see every day are a great way to help audiences view my everyday routine and personality. I want to try to include where my time is spent and how I depict the people around me. This does not necessarily mean drawing people but representing them in a creative way into the artwork. These statements were only part of their journey and while the photo does not do their work justice, I wanted to represent the work and the individuals who created them, together. (Three students were absent)

Year 7 Ceramics

Year 7 students finished off their ceramic work this term……finally. It was a pleasure to see them get back into the task and be able to take home completed work. It has also been lovely to photograph students without masks, to see those gorgeous faces.

Online Art and Design Exhibition

Finally, the Online Art and Design exhibition results (with some additional awards/certificates) will be announced in assemblies on Monday 29 November for Fairview, Cumberland and Dunhelen. Brookhill will follow on Friday 3 December. In the meantime, here are a few stats…
