VET Certificates / Courses

Congratulations to all the students who have completed VET Certificates this year or who are on their way toward completion. The last two years have been challenging for vocational education with RTO and TAFE closures due to COVID-19. Understandably, it has been frustrating for the students who have needed to pivot to remote learning – but students have persisted been able to get through the Units of Competency and gain a nationally accredited qualification.

Another aspect of VET that parents and students may not be aware of is the availability of courses that can be completed entirely outside school and that can contribute to a VCE or VCAL certificate. For example, the Cert III in Dance (CUA30113) is offered by many dance studios around Melbourne. If your child is enrolled in a dance school and is in Year 10 or Year 11 in 2022, they may like to consider including the Cert III in Dance as part of their VCE or VCAL program. If this is you, I suggest that you make enquiries now with your dance school. This certificate may appeal particularly to 2022 Year 10 students interested

in getting an early start to VCE and an additional subject that can contribute to an ATAR.

This year, two Year 11 students, Hayley R (pictured) and Alira P completed the Cert III in Dance which will provide a handy boost to their ATAR when they complete Year 12.

Another VET course that students may not know about is the Cert III in Retail (SIR30216) which is available to students who have a part-time job at KFC or McDonalds. This is an excellent retail training course that can contribute to a VCAL or VCE certificate. The Cert III in Retail is unscored, so there are no exams – but students who complete the course will receive a block credit that contributes to their ATAR. Students who have a part-time job in the fast-food industry should inquire with their manager if they are interested in this course.

Any students that are enrolled in VET certificates outside school should speak to the VET Coordinator to ensure their enrolment is added to VASS.
