ACC Athletics Team

On Wednesday 13 September the College competed at the ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. After winning B division in 2016 the challenge was to hold our place and show that we deserved our spot in A division in 2017. The timing of the carnival is not ideal, with senior students focused towards their impending WACE exams, but then again when is anything timed ideally! Our athletes were outstanding. We had some key student athletes missing due to injury or illness. But the commitment, character and ‘have a go’ attitude was a pleasure to watch. Congratulations to all the students involved in the ACC carnival. You were a credit to yourselves and represented the College with distinction. I’d also like to thank students for their commitment to training, with numbers well up on previous years. On the day John XXIII College finished 5th Overall, maintaining our position in A division for 2018.

Results for the day can be viewed via the following link; http://www.accsport.asn.au/system/files/sportstrak/athletics/2017/athsa/page1.htm

Congratulations to the following students who placed in the top 4 overall for their age division.

  • Lucille Gleghorn 1st U/14 female
  • Aislinn Morris 2nd u/15 female
  • Alexander Kirwan 3rd u/16 male
  • Ellen Robinson 2nd u/16 female
  • Rebecca Thornton 3rd Open female
  • Joseph Salt – Joe was the first inclusion competitor for John XXIII at an ACC carnival

Further congratulations to Aislinn Morris who broke the u/15 javelin record with a throw of 38.68m.

Finally I would like to thank our coaches. In particular Mr Cameron Haines who organised our early morning coaching sessions. A difficult job when you are trying to cover so many different athletic disciplines. As mentioned Term Three is a busy time, but our PE staff give their time to early morning trainings throughout Term Three whilst continuing a busy academic program. We are also blessed to have the expertise of Mr Yagan Williams, along with being a mathematical whiz, he is also an accomplished sprint coach. We were again lucky to have the services of Mr Tim Lyons and his son Hamish (class of 2016) to mentor our throwers. Previous students, Olivia Lyons (2012), Hannah Cadlolo (2014) and Christopher Capretta (2016) also lent their time to give back to the College. We also had the services of Front Runner Sport to train our distance runners. Finally we were lucky to have top WA and Australian hurdler Brianna Beahan. Brianna provided the technical expertise to succeed at one of the most difficult events.

Thank you again to all involved as we look forward to 2018.
