World Cup Representation

 

Ms. Sue Sofarnos, who is the Sports Coordinator at MSJ is going to the Rathbone Lacrosse World Cup in Guilford England next month to represent Australia as part of the Australian Team. World Cups are held every 4 years  with the first held in 1982 and Australia has medalled at all World Cups to date, winning in 1986 and 2005. The World Cup is followed by the World Games in Wroclaw Poland, July 26 - 30, a first for Lacrosse and an important step for lacrosse to return as an event in the Olympic Games.

 

Sue who has represented Australia in Lacrosse  since 1978, and at 5 World Cups as a player in 1882, 1986, 89, 1993 and 1997 and World Cup Coach in 2005 and 2009,  World Champion team member in 1986 as a player and 2005 as Coach and  will now be an Technical Analyst for the Australian Team in 2017.

 

Sue is pictured with her daughter Hayley Sofarnos, who is also representing Australia. This is Hayley's first senior World Cup but she has also represented Australia in 2007 at U19 World Championship. This a  dream come true for the Sofarnos family to compete in this World Cup together.

 

MSJ has been integral part of this Australian Lacrosse team World Cup preparation by supporting not only Sue but the entire Australian Team by allowing them to use the school facilities for training camps and weekly Victorian team member training sessions.

 

Sue's sporting experiences at world level enriches her role as Sports Coordinator at MSJ and we wish her and the Australian team, the very best of luck.

MSJ students selected for University of Melbourne STEM program

Girl Power in STEM is a University of Melbourne program for female high school students, contributing towards gender parity in STEM disciplines: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Congratulations to Riona Elsous and Pooja Chelimela of Year 9 who have been selected to take a part in the Girl Power in Stem Camp. The application process was highly competitive, with over 300 students from across the state applying. The female student camp will run from the Monday 3 July till midday Wednesday 5 July 2017.

 

The camp will consist of:

·       Presentations by academics

·       Panel discussions with industry

·       Hands on and interactive workshops 

·       An opportunity to interact with current engineering and IT students           at the University

 

A special mention to Caitlin Soto and Bianca Aguila from Year 9 who both made it to the 2nd stage in the application process.
