RACV Energy Breakthrough

KPS Shooting Stars
In February, a group of parents from our year level brought it to the teacher’s attention that the 5/6 year level of 2017 would like to represent Kingswood Primary School at the RACV Energy Breakthrough Challenge. The next step was to find other kids to take part in this program so we had the required amount of participants. We made an application sheet on our school website for parents who had Year 5/6 kids to sign up if they were interested in this challenge.
Once we found a team of interested Year 5/6s, we had to exercise to get our fitness up. We started to bike ride around Braeside Park for training once a week, which was 7kms.
Around 5 weeks into training, we started having classes during school hours from one of our teachers who had been through the process of this challenge before. We learnt all about the lights, flags, safety and environment and about the structure of the car. Before we were allowed to drive the car, we had to pass a test about what we had learnt.
Then of course, we had to have a team name and uniform so we created a design to print onto our team tops. We wear them to school every week on Friday to show the rest of the school.
Once we were physically prepared, we had to be financially ready so we held fundraising days. During the school holidays, we booked out a cinema to raise money, we also organised school lunch order days and a barbeque to raise money. One of the things that would help us fundraise was to spread the word across school of who we are, so we prepared a speech to present at our school assembly.
One of the vital elements to prepare for this challenge was time. Because we were so busy during our classes, we had to find time on weekends and holidays to work on our presentation and car design.
At this point, we were both physically, financially and mentally prepared for our race. However, we did not know what to expect. For all of us this was our first time doing something like this, so we went to the Casey Field Race on the 14th of October to get a rough idea of what to expect at Maryborough.
We are all prepared and ready for this amazing experience. On Wednesday, 22nd of November, we will head off to Maryborough in a convoy with our parents and siblings.
Wish us luck!
