Legal Studies News

Last Friday, 6 of our students from Year 11 Legal Studies took part in their first Mock Trial, held at the Leeton Court House. Adrian Piccoli (former Marian student, solicitor and NSW Education Minister) was our magistrate and Riverina Anglican College travelled from Wagga Wagga to defend their client, an alleged thief of 50 PS4 games! Students played roles of barristers, solicitor, witnesses and court clerk. Duties included preparing pre-trial notes for the magistrate, delivering an opening and closing address to the court, examination and cross-examination of the witnesses and answering questions from the defence. Our brief was to convince the magistrate, beyond reasonable doubt, that the defendant had indeed stolen the goods in question. Fortunately for the accused, we were unable reach this standard of proof as a ‘not guilty’ verdict was delivered. An invaluable experience of our legal system was shared by all and congratulations go to the participants from both schools for an entertaining court case.
