Year 11 physics students finished off an assessment task on the physics of car impacts by brainstorming, designing, building and testing a variety of devices designed to keep an uncooked egg safe and sound after an impact.

The students tested their designs by dropping them 3m from a balcony onto concrete and used all the ideas they had been researching into the technologies used to keep us safe on the road.

Crumple zones, airbags, seatbelts and roll cages were all used to slow the impact down, thereby reducing the forces the egg experienced.

After using video analysis technology, the students were able to see how fast the vehicles were travelling before their impact and calculate the forces the poor eggs experienced in their travels.

The students enjoyed the task and are looking forward to their upcoming Depth Study next term.
