Wheelers Hill Swimming Squad 2020

This year our swimming squad was made up of 53 students from Years 4, 5 and 6. Time trials were held at Swim World in Glen Waverley on Tuesday February 11th. Many students confidently put their hands up trying out for several events. The actual competition was held at the Oakleigh Recreation Centre on Thursday February 20th. The day of this event was cloudy and a little cool but luckily there was no rain. The competition was really tough with some extremely close finishes. Our WHPS students swam well with lovely stroke techniques, especially the younger year 4 students who stood out as real champions with a large assortment of ribbons by the end of the day. It was terrific to see those students wearing our orange swim caps, which certainly stood out in the pool. Our team thoroughly enjoyed themselves and did us proud on the day, with many parents there to cheer the students on.

The 50m events are competitive races for more experienced swimmers. These events include: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, as well as freestyle and mixed medley relays. It was pleasing to see that we were able to fill all but one event this year, which is a real credit to our younger students. The final scores were incredibly close, and WHPS came second, just behind Camelot Rise by 6 points this year. Second place is a wonderful effort and we are all very proud of the team and their hard work which certainly paid off.

Leisure pool activities are designed to add a little bit of fun in a more relaxed pool environment. This allows everyone to participate for enjoyment and further their skill development in the smaller pool. This year the 15m leisure pool activities included: wading races, piggy back races, pool noodle races, kickboard swims, and ring collection. We came third for the events held in this pool again this year.

All students who came first or second in their ‘A’ event race were then given the opportunity to compete again at Division (Zone) level on Tuesday March 3rd at the Monash Aquatic & Recreation Centre. This year we had 20 of our 50 m students representing the school at this event. A terrific effort and 7 more than last year!

Many thanks to all senior school staff for their continued support and assistance during the carnival this year. Also thanks to those parents who volunteered their time to assist, supervise, time and support all our wonderful WHPS students.

Finally, well done to all of those students who participated in the 2020 Swim squad. I was especially proud of the enthusiasm, peer support, manners, behaviour and sportsmanship displayed by all of our students. Well done, thank you and I hope that many of you will volunteer to be involved in the carnival again next year in 2021.
