London Work Experience Programme/Londýnský program pracovních zkušeností

I am very interested in the legal profession because I was brought up and grew up in this atmosphere: my father and mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, my uncle and an aunt are lawyers. I cannot imagine myself in a different specialty. I like to keep in touch with current legal practice, but mainly my experience was coming from the Ukrainian legal system. That’s why it was very interesting to gain experience in London, the centre of all worldwide companies and businesses. In particular, I was interested in organisations that work towards the protection of human rights all around the world. In London I was lucky: I lived with the very affable and kind Mrs Lewis, who invited me to a cinema to watch the  movie ‘Peterloo’ about the Peterloo Massacre of 1819.

The London Work Experience Programme gave me an amazing chance to work in the EHRAC (European Human Rights Advocacy Centre) and I was warmly welcomed into their team. In the centre, I was allowed to get acquainted with so many human rights' cases from different countries around the globe. Not only was this experience informative for me, but I also got acquainted with many new people, visited a lecture at the Middlesex University about Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights and talked to a Doctor of Law. Unfortunately, one week was not enough: the week passed very quickly. To sum up, the London Work Experience Programme was a very interesting experience for me in terms of my future studies at university and my future job.

Mám velký zájem o advokacii, protože jsem byla vychována a vyrůstala v této atmosféře: můj otec a matka, babička, prababička, můj strýc a teta - všichni jsou právníci. Neumím si představit, že bych pracovala v jiném oboru.

Ráda sleduji současnou právní praxí, avšak moje zkušenost převážně pochází z ukrajinského právního systému. Proto bylo velmi zajímavé získat zkušenosti v Londýně, v centru všech světových firem a podniků. Zejména jsem se zajímala o organizace, které pracují v oblasti ochrany lidských práv po celém světě. V Londýně jsem měla štěstí: bydlela jsem u velmi přívětivé a laskavé paní Lewis, která mě pozvala do kina na filmu „Peterloo“ o masakru Peterloo z roku 1819.

Program pracovních zkušeností v Londýně mi poskytl úžasnou možnost pracovat v centru EHRAC (European Human Rights Advocacy Centre), kde mě srdečně přivítali do týmu. V centru jsem se seznámila s mnoha případy v oblasti ochrany lidských práv v různých zemích světa. Tato zkušenost byla nejen informativní, ale také jsem se seznámila s mnoha novými lidmi, navštívila jsem přednášku na Middlesex University o článku 3 Evropské úmluvy o lidských právech a promluvila jsem si s doktorem práv. Bohužel jeden týden na vše nestačil a utekl velmi rychle. Londýnský program pracovních stáží byl pro mne velmi zajímavou zkušeností z hlediska mých budoucích studií na univerzitě a mé budoucí kariéry.

Imperial College London

It was the last day of my internship in London. I can't say that I wasn't looking forward going home, to be honest, I was getting slightly homesick; however, I still felt a small pinch in my heart when, for the hundredth time that morning, I thought about leaving this week behind me. My host family, a friendly couple, their cats and their house had provided me with a home for that week, and I was grateful that they had created someplace where I wanted to go to in the evenings and didn't want to leave in the mornings.

The commute was much more comfortable than I thought it would be. I was living just a couple of minutes away from the subway station and Imperial College,  where my work placement was, was only two streets away from a station on the same line. As I was walking around the park towards the Flowers building, I recalled the first time I was here. A week; five days. It seems like a short time but let me tell you, if you have a supervisor that looks after you, that goes the extra mile, and, this is mostly true for science, lets you have your little project and do actual hands-on jobs, that one week, those five days,

it can make all the difference.

Standing in the rain with a pink umbrella to shield me from the cold water, I went through what I learned that week. Polymerase chain reaction, protein synthesis, gel electrolysis, inserting genes into plasmids. My supervisor taught me a lot, and I knew that what I learned here, I would not forget. Still, I feel like it wasn't what I brought home with me. Before I left for London, I wasn't completely sold on the idea of devoting my life to science, I wasn't even sure if I wanted to study it in the first place, however, after the placement I have no doubt that this is what I want to do.

Byl poslední den mé stáže v Londýně. Nemohu říci, že jsem se netěšila domů. Abych byla upřímná, už se mi celkem stýskalo; nicméně v srdci jsem cítila malou tíseň, když jsem ráno už po sté přemýšlela o tom, že ten týden skončí. Moje hostitelská rodina, přátelský pár, jejich kočky a jejich dům mi na týden poskytli domov a byla jsem vděčná, že vytvořili místo, kam jsem se chtěla večer vracet a odkud se mi ráno nechtělo odejít.

Doprava byla mnohem pohodlnější, než jsem si myslela, že bude. Bydlela jsem jen pár minut od stanice metra a Imperial College, kde jsem pracovala, byla jen dvě ulice od stanice na stejné trase. Když jsem kráčela kolem parku směrem k budově Flowers building, vzpomněla jsem si na moment, kdy jsem tu byla poprvé. Týden - pět dní. Zdá se, že je to krátká doba, ale máte-li nadřízeného, ​​který se o vás stará, dělá i něco navíc, to platí hlavně o vědě, umožní vám mít svůj malý projekt a provádět skutečné praktické práce, tak jeden týden, těch pět dní, může znamenat mnoho.

Když jsem stála v dešti s růžovým deštníkem, který mě ochránil před studenou vodou, prošla jsem si v duchu to, co jsem se dozvěděla. Polymerázová řetězová reakce, syntéza proteinů, gelová elektrolýza, vložení genů do plazmidů. Můj nadřízený mě toho naučil hodně a věděla jsem, že to, co jsem se zde naučila už nezapomenu. Přesto mám pocit, že to nebylo to hlavní, co jsem si s sebou přivezla domů. Než jsem odjela do Londýna, nebyla jsem úplně přesvědčená myšlenkou věnovat svůj život vědě, nebyla jsem si jistá, jestli tento obor zvolím ke studiu, ale nyní už o tom nepochybuji.

Johanka’s supervisor was Nikol Kadeřábková, who graduated from the ECP in 2013. Nikol is studying for her PhD in Microbiology at Imperial and we are very grateful to her for arranging two work experience placements, including Johanka’s.

Nikol Kadeřábková, která absolvovala ECP v roce 2013, byla Johančinou vedoucí. Studuje doktorandský program v oboru mikrobiologie v Imperial College a děkujeme jí, že sjednala dvě pracovní stáže (z nichž jedna byla pro Johanku).

Graphic Design/Grafický design

I had a great opportunity for work experience in London during our half-term. Being interested in illustration, it is hard to find a stable work placement, therefore I was given a “package” of different work placements and visits connected to graphic design. Some days I met amazing graphic designers, other days I was behind-the-scenes at the Tate and many more. Funny to say I felt like I was already at college, by myself, where everything was my own responsibility, although I did get a lot of help from my hostess who was really nice and made my stay much more pleasant.

My favourite work was at Faber Faber, the publishing house. Although I wished I could have stayed there longer, it was an unforgettable experience. I was welcomed by two talented book cover designers who were really funny, trendy and friendly. They made me feel relaxed and “equal”. I felt safe to ask them any questions and to share my portfolio. We were talking for an hour or so discussing the graphic design world, our different inspirations, news in the art world etc. I was then given a brief they were also working on to try and experience the job of a real book cover designer. The brief gave me a synopsis of the book and told me what emotions or themes it wanted to convey. With that information I then had to design a book cover. 

The other programmes were also interesting, however some of them didn't turn out the way I expected. So I ended up with some free time that I used to visit many galleries and to explore London. I also took this opportunity to visit Brighton and see the coastline when a short placement fell through.

Although I was challenged at times, I certainly don't regret doing this work experience as any experience is valuable. I didn’t learn a lot of new things about graphics or illustration, which I had hoped for, but I did get to “experience” London for a week and to realise that I hate the rush in the crowded underground, but also love the innovative side of a metropolis.

Během podzimních prázdnin jsem měla skvělou příležitost zkusit si pracovní praxi v Londýně. Zajímám se o ilustrace a v této oblasti je těžké najít stabilní pracovní místo, proto jsem dostala „balíček“ různých pracovních stáží a návštěv spojených s grafickým designem. Někdy jsem se například setkala s úžasnými grafickými designéry, jindy jsem byla v zákulisí muzea Tate a tak dále. Ačkoli mi byla moje patronka velmi nápomocná, byla opravdu milá a můj pobyt mi velmi zpříjemnila, měla jsem pocit, jako bych už byla na vysoké škole, sama za sebe, kdy je všechno moje vlastní odpovědnost.

Moje nejoblíbenější část praxe byla ve vydavatelství Faber Faber. Byl to nezapomenutelný zážitek a přála jsem si, abych tam mohla zůstat déle. Přivítali mě dva talentovaní designéři obálek knih, kteří byli opravdu zábavní, moderní a přátelští. Cítila jsem se uvolněná a „jim rovna“. Mohla jsem jim bez zábran položit jakékoliv dotazy a podělit se o své portfolio. Zhruba hodinu jsme si povídali o světě grafického designu, o našich různých inspiracích, o novinkách v uměleckém světě apod. Potom jsem dostala krátký pracovní úkol a vyzkoušela jsem si práci skutečného designéra knižních obálek. Stručné zadání mi dalo přehled o knize a o tom, jaké emoce či témata by měla vyjádřit. S použitím těchto informací jsem pak navrhla přebal knihy.

Ostatní programy byly také zajímavé, nicméně některé z nich se nevyvedly tak, jak jsem čekala. Měla jsem tak i nějaký volný čas, který jsem využila k návštěvám mnoha galerií a prozkoumání Londýna. Když jedna z aktivit nedopadla, využila jsem i příležitosti navštívit Brighton a prohlédnout si pobřeží.

Přestože byl můj pracovní týden chvílemi náročný, rozhodně nelituji účasti v tomto programu, protože každá zkušenost je cenná. Nenaučila jsem se tolik nových věcí o grafice a ilustraci, kolik jsem doufala, ale mohla jsem na týden „zažít“ Londýn. Uvědomila jsem si, že nemám ráda shon v přeplněném metru, ale zároveň miluji inovativní styl této metropole.
