Studenti ECP na soutěži WSC 2018 v New Haven, Yale

In November 10 ECP students travelled to Yale to partake in the World Scholar's Cup - a global academic debating tournament. This was organised as a part of the debating ECA run by Miss Collier. In run up to the event the students practised debating and studied the themes and topics selected for this year's tournament during and outside of the debating ECA. They then excitedly departed from Prague on the 16th arriving into a lovely Airbnb house in New Haven where they would spend the next 5 days. They cooked for themselves with varying degrees of success, kept a good atmosphere and a few of them kept themselves fit by going for morning runs by the beach.

On the 17th the WSC started with the opening ceremony followed by a keynote speech by a Harvard professor on his project, the Hemlock Hospice. The day was rounded out by the “Scavenger Hunt”, an activity in which students got to interact with other debaters from all over the world through engaging activities and casual conversation. This was followed by another speech from a Yale professor on the topic of integrity and morality in business. Over the next three days students then wrote a collaborative essay, took the notorious “Scholar’s Challenge” test and the “Bowl” - a competitive group quiz, watched an impressive debate showcase and attended the Scholar’s Ball where some became more excited about the prospect of meeting other students. They also debated of course, each team from the ECP winning either one or two of their three debates, which given the determination and preparation of the other schools was very respectable. Some attended the talent show and the Cultural Fair and were impressed and entertained by the skills and talent on show along with the foods and other signature features of different cultures that were on display. The whole event was concluded by the closing ceremony during which ECP students received up to 7 medals, as acquired by Linda Novobilská for achievements ranging from essay writing to excellent debating performance and teamwork. The students had a good time at the competition, made new friends, had interesting experiences and were very grateful and excited about the opportunity to visit New York. There they spent two nights and visited the One World Observatory, which has an amazing view of NYC, got a look at the according to many students surprisingly small Statue of Liberty, visited the Czech consulate and the MoMA, tasted a typical Thanksgiving dinner and most importantly, did their shopping. The students then returned to Prague on the 25th having had an interesting experience that advanced them academically, bonded them within the group and brought them a lot of fun and joy.

V listopadu odcestovalo deset studentů ECP na univerzitu Yale, kde se zúčastnili soutěže World Scholar's Cup - celosvětového akademického debatního turnaje - v rámci debatního kroužku ECP, který vede paní Collier. Během přípravy na tuto událost studenti procvičovali diskusi a studovali témata vybraná pro tento ročník turnaje, a to jak během kroužku, tak i mimo něj. Poté se nadšeně vydali z Prahy a 16.11. dorazili do krásného domu v New Haven zajištěného přes Airbnb, kde strávili příštích 5 dní. Vařili si s různými stupni úspěšnosti, udržovali si dobrou náladu a několik z nich pracovalo na své kondici tím, že ráno chodili běhat po pláži. Dne 17.11. proběhlo slavnostní zahájení soutěže WSC. Hlavní proslov pronesl profesor z Harvardu o projektu Hemlock Hospic. Den byl zakončen aktivitou „Scavenger Hunt“, při které studenti spolupracovali s ostatními debatéry z celého světa prostřednictvím různých aktivit a neformálních rozhovorů. Následoval další projev, tentokrát od profesora z Yale University na téma integrita a morálka v podnikání. V následujících třech dnech studenti napsali společnou esej, podstoupili notoricky známý test „Scholar's Challenge“ a soutěžní skupinový kvíz „Bowl“, sledovali působivou přehlídku debat a účastnili se soutěžního bálu, kde byli někteří velmi nadšení perspektivou setkání s dalšími studenty. Každý tým ECP vyhrál jednu nebo dvě ze svých tří debat, což je velmi slušný výsledek. Někteří se zúčastnili výstavy talentů a kulturního veletrhu a byli ohromeni a pobaveni předvedenými dovednostmi a talenty, ale také prezentací potravin a dalších charakteristických znaků různých kultur, které byly zastoupeny. Celá akce byla uzavřena závěrečným ceremoniálem, během něhož získali studenti ECP 7 medailí. Linda Novobilská získala ocenění za esej, vynikající debatu a týmovou práci. Studenti si soutěž užili, získali nové přátele, zajímavé zkušenosti a byli velmi vděční a nadšení z příležitosti navštívit New York. Tam strávili dvě noci a navštívili observatoř Jeden svět, která poskytuje úžasný výhled na město, prohlédli si podle mnoha studentů překvapivě malou Sochu svobody, navštívili český konzulát a muzeum MoMA, ochutnali večeři typickou pro Den díkůvzdání a co je nejdůležitější, nakupovali. Studenti se pak 25.11. vrátili do Prahy plni inspirativních zážitků, které je posunuly akademicky, propojily je jako skupinu a přinesly jim spoustu zábavy a radosti.
