Science News

We are at the end of a long and eventful term.  Today, my Year 9 class was finally successful at making electricity with lemons and a piece of copper and zinc. Like all scientists, we said that if at once you don’t succeed, you have to try again.  Luigi Galvani and Alexandra Volta, who made the first battery, did the experiment with a frog instead of a lemon and so the first battery was developed.  This activity connected history and scientific practice with the electricity that we enjoy and are thankful for in our lives.

Most classes have completed the assessment tasks to showcase their learning this term. The focus for Year 8, Year 9 and Year 11 was on scientific reporting. This is a very important skill for budding scientists and will continually improve over the year.  The seniors, in preliminary, did amazing work presenting very professional reports for their first depth study. We hope that all students feel that they have developed their understanding of the natural world, which we often take for granted, and that they continue to build their brains at MCC next term.

On behalf of the science teachers, I wish you all a restful and safe holiday break.

Best wishes
