Clever Classes

Kinder | Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3

Kinder

Kinder have been learning all about shapes. We have learnt that to work out what a shape is, you need to look at and count the sides and corners. We went on a shape hunt around the school to find different shapes in everyday objects. We found circles, squares, rectangles and triangles. We also created shape collages using these shapes.

We had to count how many of each shape we used.

We have also been documenting the progress of the new hall. This week we observed a huge crane lifting the metal poles. We have made predictions about why we think the metal poles are there:

Eleanor: “if it’s too windy they might fall down.”

Theo: “it’s for the roof.”

Remi: “maybe it will stop it from falling down”

We then drew what we observed.

Prep

Prep with their 5/6 Buddies had a Science afternoon.

We had four different activities to participate in.

We made cyclones and Coke volcanoes, we were challenged to make a water-carrying object, and lastly, we learnt how to create an electrical circuit.

There was a great deal of learning, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving during this afternoon.

Plus we had SO much fun!

Grade 1

During Science week Grade 1 Leatherwood explored many things science.

Our focus was on light (which moves in a straight line by the way!),

chemical vs. physical reactions and drawing and labelling our experiments just like scientists do.

It was a great fun way to engage in our Science learning.

The Australian Curriculum states that: by the end of Grade 1, students describe objects and events that they encounter in their everyday lives and the effects of interacting with materials and objects.

Students respond to questions, make predictions, and participate in guided investigations of everyday phenomena. They follow instructions to record and sort their observations and share them with others.

We had so much fun making Coke Guizers and Shadows!

Ask your child, which was their favourite.

Grade 2

In Grade two we looked at the Healthy Food Pyramid to develop a better understanding about how a healthy diet requires us to eat more of some foods and less of others.

We considered what a balanced diet might look like, using our knowledge of the types of foods our bodies need.

Some things we think are:

  • If you eat vegetables and fruit you will be healthy and strong
  • Eating healthy and exercise is good for your body
  • Healthy foods help your brain
  • Eat fruit and vegetables everyday!
  • You should eat more vegetables than chocolate.

We created our own fruit and vegetable self portraits, We enjoyed this activity and we think the finished products look pretty funny!

What clever classes!  Thank you for sharing your recent work with us.
