Kelston 1st 15 Auckland Champs:

It was an absolute privilege and joy to travel to Eden Park Number One last Saturday to watch Kelston Boys High School play St Peters College in the Auckland Secondary Schools 1st 15 Auckland A1 Grand Final.

One of the stars of the team is First Five Regan Brown. Regan is a proud ex-student of Western Heights. He was an outstanding performer when with us and has gone on from strength to strength since.

My son Tiaki did his seventh form year at Kelston and loved it. So we were both very proud to see a packed stadium and an outstanding game. Kelston went behind 10 to nil in the first five minutes. Right on half time, Regan scored a brilliant individual try that took Kelston out to a 14 to 10 at the break.

After scoring another ten points in the second half, it looked like a good win was on the cards for Kelston. However, St Peter's came storming back and with a couple of minutes to go it was 24 to 22 to Kelston. St Peter's then went on a final attacking onslaught. They stormed upfield and were driving for the line again and again and again. Kelston not only had to hold them out, but they also had to be exceptionally careful not to concede a penalty that would lose them the game.

Finally, St Peter's spun the ball wide, and their winger flew through the air right in the corner. If he dotted down, it was game over. As he stretched down, he lost the ball in the tackle, Kelston cleared, and the final whistle blew.

WOW! (and Whew!)
