The facts about vaping

As reported in the media, the rate of vaping amongst young people is steadily rising. Vaping is the inhaling of vapor created by an electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette.

The accessibility of e-cigarettes, which are often cheaper than conventional cigarettes and therefore more attractive to young people, is of high concern. They are sold in brightly coloured packaging, available in a variety of flavours and look like everyday items - such as highlighters, pens and USB memory sticks, which also adds to their desirability and appeal.

Despite it being illegal for under-18s to purchase any type of e-cigarette or vaping product in Australia, teenagers are finding ways to access them online. Australia has strict regulations in place for nicotine-containing products, and attempts are being made to regular vaping and ban their importation.

It is understood that many flavoured liquids associated with vaping contain not only high levels of nicotine, but also other potentially harmful additives. There are some claims that a number of these 'e-liquids' contain chemicals that are likely to be toxic, and that when inhaled or vaped repeatedly, may cause severe lung damage.

At school, the use and possession of vapes is a serious breach of the College School Wide Positive Behaviour Policy and Guidelines.

School TV’s Special Report provides parents and carers with an opportunity to learn more about vaping and the negative health impacts it has on young people.

As a College, we will continue to educate our staff and students on the impacts of e-cigarettes. We encourage you as parents and carers to have open, non-judgmental conversations with your young person around this topic. The following facts about vaping, sourced from www.health.nsw.gov.au/vaping may be useful conversation-starters.
