Mathematics

A Marvellous Maths Family Morning!

Wow, what a morning! A huge thank you to all families that participated in our Maths Family Morning. The children were thrilled to have you learning alongside them in the classroom.

We hope the day gave you an insight into the contemporary ways we teach mathematics at St James; emphasising learning mathematics with deep understanding rather than remembering rules and procedures which may not ‘make sense’.

A warm thank you to those that left comments about the day; we were pleased with the amount of positive feedback received. Thank you to those that left their curiosities; it will drive our future sessions on parent and family engagement.

What was one new learning you had about Mathematics at St James?

  • It's collaborative
  • Learning counting by playing rich games
  • The fact that the school’s focus is seeded in evidence-based learning
  • The approach is a real contrast to 30 years ago and is very safe and collaborative
  • It can be fun with lots of games
  • That there are so many different and fun ways to learn
  • Kids' learning grows by making mistakes
  • Interactive, varied, and fun
  • Learning is very collaborative
  • How the peer interaction/moderation helped the learning and student engagement
  • Learning maths is fun!
