Maths Explorers

Caulfield Junior College has participated in the first year of the Maths Explorer program in 2022. This is a Maths-based problem solving program for year 4 students organised by the Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) and will lead into our Maths Olympiad program for our year 5/6 students which we have been competing in for the last four years. Our students were selected to participate early in term one based on their achievements in Maths. Every year, schools from all over Australia, New Zealand and other neighbouring countries take part in the APSMO Maths Games and Maths Olympiads.

The APSMO launched the Maths Explorer for younger students this year, as part of their expanded Pathway of Achievement, and are looking forward to giving them an opportunity to learn and develop important skills and lay the foundations for future problem solving success. CJC was delighted to be involved and participate in this inaugural competition. The Maths Explorer consists of five separate contests, held approximately six weeks apart between March and September, as well as preparation and practise completed almost every week. The overall aim is to encourage students to work together and develop the foundations of mathematical problem solving in an enjoyable, non-threatening environment.

From the visual art room

This week in Art, Year 6 students gave their sew a softie project to their Prep buddies much to the delight of the students. At the beginning of the term, Year 6 met with the Preps to collaborate and design a soft toy. After drawing and discussing what they would like, Year 6 were set to task to try and create these imaginary creatures out of felt as a part of their textile unit in Art. The Preps were so excited and delighted to receive their softie, especially made for them.

Students in 5/6 had to design a brochure to promote a secondary school created in their imagination.  This is the excellent (and a tad humoristic) from Betsie (56B)
