University Destinations 2021/Absolventi ECP 2021 míří na prestižní univerzity

In terms of university results, we have had one of the best years in the College’s history. 98% of the students who applied to university succeeded at their first choice university.

Co se týče úspěšnosti přijetí na univerzity, rok 2021 byl pro nás jeden z nejlepších v historii školy. 98 % ze studentů, kteří se hlásili na vysokou školu, uspělo na své nejpreferovanější univerzitě.

Theme of the year: Roots/Téma školního roku: Kořeny

The themes we have been choosing for the recent academic years have accidently in a way mirrored the situation in  society. Last year’s theme was Time, and lockdown really made us think about different concepts of time, time had a different impact on our lives than ever before. Technology, the theme for 2019/2020, could not have been chosen better, as almost the whole school year we explored how to use technology best when teaching remotely. Both themes gave us an opportunity to see things from a different perspective and in a way, the lockdown helped us to think about all issues related to these themes even more deeply.

This year, the theme Roots brings us back to the foundations. What foundations? This is exactly what we will be asking the for whole year, through many activities and events. And again, maybe this is the right time to go back to our roots, to find our foundations so we do not lose what can make us stronger for what is to come.

Témata, která jsme v posledních akademických letech volili, shodou okolností odrážela situaci ve společnosti. Loňské téma roku byl čas a karanténa nás skutečně přiměla přemýšlet o různých pojetích času, čas měl na naše životy jiný dopad než kdykoli předtím. Technologie, což bylo téma pro školní rok 2019/2020, nemohlo být zvoleno lépe, protože téměř celý školní rok jsme zjišťovali, jak nejlépe využít technologie při výuce na dálku. Obě témata nám dala příležitost vidět věci z jiné perspektivy a karanténa nám svým způsobem pomohla zamyslet se nad všemi otázkami souvisejícími s těmito tématy ještě hlouběji.

Letos máme téma Kořeny, které nás vrací zpět k základům. Jakým? Přesně na to se budeme ptát po celý rok prostřednictvím mnoha aktivit a akcí. A možná je opět ten správný čas na návrat ke kořenům, abychom našli své základy a neztratili to, co nás může posílit pro vše, co přijde.

Rooting for the floor/Kořeny na parketu

Often we are told the ideal state is to keep your head up gazing into the sky whilst keeping your feet on the ground. In other words: grounded-the mellow way. This saying has been once again reiterated, speaking for myself, and I dare to say for many others after the compelling presentation given to our Y3 and Y4 students by Mr. Kriss. 

Kristián Mensa, known by his stage name as Kriss, is a Czech actor, dancer and illustrator. Amongst his many successes and poignant journeys he is also the winner of the 2019 Red Bull dance competition.

In the background of all his successes is a touching story which returns back to Kriss` roots-the roots that kept him grounded.

The first anecdote Kriss told us in relation to our school topic, Roots, was about his exchange year in the USA. Feelings of alienation and estrangement often occupied his thoughts. Luckily for Kriss a cure for this wasn't far from reach. 

The first thing he did upon his arrival to his host family was google the nearest dance studios around his house. Dancing and the dance community have become a kind of sanctuary for Kriss which he has carried with him back to Prague. 

Apart from dancing Kriss has also found himself in a more static form of the arts-drawing. His sketches often represent a theme or perhaps even a problematic scenario. This is then interpreted using everyday objects in the form of an installed photograph. His art gained a lot of recognition through an online site he wrote an article on. For Kriss waking up to this site having over 30k views was something unimaginable. 

For Kriss, unlike most of us, his roots are still to a large extent a mystery to him. Although there is evidence that his grandfather was from Ghana, he never had the chance to meet him. In 2019 Kriss and his mother finally made a trip to Ghana in efforts to disclose the mysteries surrounding their roots. Unfortunately apart from a yellowed antiqued photograph, which perhaps begs even more questions than before, the story of his grandfather still remains under a veil of secrecy. 

Kriss is nevertheless planning to return back to Ghana, his roots, and search on. Maybe someday soon we will welcome him again with new stories and discoveries to share.

Často slýcháme, že ideálním stavem je držet hlavu vzhůru, dívat se na nebe a přitom se držet nohama pevně na zemi. Jinými slovy: být zrale při zemi. Dle mého názoru bylo toto rčení znovu připomenuto po přesvědčivé prezentaci, kterou našim studentům 3 a 4. ročníku předvedl pan Kriss.

Kristián Mensa, známý pod uměleckým jménem Kriss, je český herec, tanečník a ilustrátor. Mezi jeho mnohé úspěchy a dojemné momenty patří také vítězství v taneční soutěži Red Bull 2019.

Na pozadí všech jeho úspěchů je působivý příběh, který se vrací zpět ke Krissovým kořenům, které ho držely při zemi.

První příhoda, kterou nám Kriss vyprávěl v souvislosti s naším tématem školního roku “Kořeny”, byla o jeho výměnném ročním pobytu v USA. Jeho myšlenky často vedly k pocitům odloučení a odcizení. Naštěstí byla pomoc pro Krisse na dosah.

První věc, kterou udělal po příjezdu do hostitelské rodiny, bylo to, že si našel nejbližší taneční studio kolem jeho bydliště. Tanec a taneční komunita se pro Krisse staly jakousi svatyní, kterou si s sebou přinesl i zpět do Prahy.

Kromě tance se Kriss také věnuje statičtější formě umění - kresbě. Jeho skici často představují různá témata a někdy dokonce i problematické scénáře. Interpretace je založena na předmětech každodenní potřeby ve formě nainstalované fotografie. Jeho umění si získalo velké uznání prostřednictvím online webu, kam napsal článek. Pro Krisse bylo probuzení s více než 30 tisíci shlédnutími na tomto webu něco nepředstavitelného.

Na rozdíl od většiny z nás Kriss cítí, že jeho kořeny jsou stále do značné míry záhadou. Ačkoli existují důkazy, že jeho dědeček byl z Ghany, nikdy neměl možnost se s ním setkat. V roce 2019 Kriss a jeho matka konečně podnikli výlet do Ghany ve snaze odhalit tajemství obklopující jejich kořeny. Bohužel kromě zažloutlé starožitné fotografie, která snad vyvolává ještě více otázek než dříve, zůstává příběh jeho dědečka stále pod rouškou tajemství.

Kriss se přesto plánuje vrátit zpět do Ghany, ke svým kořenům, a hledat dál. Možná ho mezi námi opět brzy přivítáme s novými příběhy a objevy, o které se s námi podělí.

Dr. Bubník's Lecture/Přednáška Dr. Bubníka

The English College had a special visitor, Dr Gerhardt Bubník, who gave a speech about his unique life experiences to the upper school students. Dr Bubník is recognised as the first Czechoslovak to attend Harvard Law School, alongside his passion for figure skating and accomplishments in his professional career. Dr Bubník is also an alumnus of the English Grammar School. The key ideas of his presentation included an emphasis on the importance of education and the need to contribute positively to the lives of others.

Tomáš Nepala, Year 6

Anglické gymnázium mělo vzácnou návštěvu, Dr. Gerhardta Bubníka, který se studenty promluvil o svých jedinečných životních zkušenostech. Kromě své vášně pro krasobruslení a úspěchů ve své profesionální kariéře je Dr. Bubník také první Čechoslovák, který navštěvoval Harvardskou právnickou univerzitu. Dr. Bubník je také absolventem pražského gymnázia “The English Grammar School”. Mezi klíčové myšlenky jeho prezentace patřil důraz na důležitost vzdělání a nutnost pozitivně ovlivňovat životy ostatních.

We are excited to receive our signed copy of Gerhardt Bubník's book: Law and Sport - My Passions which was quickly checked out by a student following the author's fascinating lecture during our Literary Festival!

Jsme nadšeni, že jsme obdrželi podepsaný výtisk knihy Gerhardta Bubníka Život mezi paragrafy, kterou si jeden ze studentů okamžitě vypůjčil, poté co shlédl fascinující přednášku autora během našeho Literárního festivalu.

Visit of Mrs Vendolsky/Návštěva paní Vendolsky

We have recently had an amazing talk with Mrs. Sieglinde Vendolsky, a lady who was a victim of the expulsion of Sudetan Germans from Czechoslovakia. She talked about her days in a labour camp, how her mother was incredibly brave and caring and how she will never feel at home anywhere else than Sudeten Germany. She also talked about how Sudeten Germans have a similar mentality to the Czech people. This talk also opened my eyes because I thought that Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia was always a country caught in between two countries fighting, that our country was always the victim, but we did almost the same atrocities in concentration and labour camps as the Germans. I am looking forward to other events like this one.

Annáš Rychtera, Year 1

Nedávno proběhla úžasná přednáška s paní Sieglinde Vendolsky, která se stala obětí odsunu sudetských Němců z Československa. Vyprávěla o svých dnech v pracovním táboře, o tom, jak byla její matka neuvěřitelně statečná a starostlivá, a jak se nikdy nebude cítit doma nikde jinde než v Sudetech. Hovořila také o tom, že sudetští Němci mají podobnou mentalitu jako Češi. Toto povídání mi otevřelo oči, protože jsem si myslel, že Česko/Československo je vždy zemí mezi dvěma bojujícími státy, že naše země byla vždy obětí, avšak v koncentračních a pracovních táborech jsme dělali téměř stejná zvěrstva jako Němci. Těším se na další podobné akce.

Přivítání bylo velmi vřelé a byli jsme ohromeni disciplínou, pozorností a způsobem výuky. Cítili jsme, že bychom opět chtěli být studenty!

Ikonické modré dveře Anglického gymnázia dostaly face-lift a jsou opět připraveny vítat studenty. Na Anglickém gymnáziu získalo už více než 1 500 studentů diplom IB.
