Year 12 Musicians have been busily completing their HSC compositions. Lockdown has provided a few extra hurdles to jump over but the class of 2021 have more than risen to the occasion. Elizabeth Kwa’s work, 'Sitting in a Field, Contemplating Life’, was recorded by Lorraine Moxey (violin), Elizabeth (cello) and Anne Stevens (piano) - each part recorded on their mobile phones - which were then taken and mixed by ex-student and sound engineer, Kris Schubert. Matilda's work, 'Liberdade' has been brought to life through sound samples put together by Kris Schubert. Tully Ritter’s composition ‘Drought’s End’ mixes live voice, recorded by Katie Sinclair, and sampled sounds. Our only Music 1 composition, ‘Get Up Over It’, was written by Grace McBeath, and includes a mix of live and sampled sounds: Lorraine Moxey on fiddle, Mr Key on electric guitar and ‘banjo’ and Alan Moxey on upright bass. Well done to all our wonderful students and thank you to Performing Arts staff who have so ably supported them.
As part of their Preliminary Exam, Year 11 Drama students completed an individual performance. Students had to develop a 4-6 minute monologue. Initially this task would have been completed at school in the Performance Theatre, however since moving to remote learning, students have had to shift gear a little, think outside the box and recreate and film their monologue at home prior to submission.
Here is a snippet of two of them:
Year 10 Drama students have been studying Small Screen Drama & Film this term and have been working on small projects each week. One of the recent topics students studied was the art of foley. Foley artists reproduce everyday sound effects that are then added to films, videos and other media in post-production to enhance the audio quality and the visual experience.
Students were given a short film without any diegetic or non-diegetic sound and were tasked with creating all the sound effects needed for the scene. Like foley artists, students had to source random objects and use their voice to create the various sounds required. They had to then individually record each sound which would be layered when editing them onto the clip.
Kinross Wolaroi string and brass students were some of the few students this year who were able to sit their AMEB examinations in a “live” setting, face-to-face with an examiner. Last year the examinations were held in October because of COVID restrictions, so there was a somewhat shorter lead up time for this year’s examinations. We were thrilled with the hard work of our students and congratulate them on their outstanding results – all students recorded either a credit, distinction or high distinction in their exams. Thanks to our wonderful instrumental staff for all of their dedication in preparing students of these exams.
Ms Dunkley’s Year 12 Drama class have made the most of lockdown by having themed Drama lessons. Here are some of the results!
Orchestral parts were sent to all students involved in this massive project last week and yesterday Miss Howarth emailed a click track so that students can begin recording their videos. Instrument allocations and other instructions are listed in the MS Teams Orchestra folder. In the Instructions folder, you will find a video tutorial on how to create your video.
It is an expectation that all members of KWS Orchestra and Junior String Orchestra participate in this project – if you have any questions, please contact Miss Howarth at kahowarth@kws.nsw.edu.au We are looking forward to seeing and hearing the finished product!
